Domaine Olivier Bernstein

About

Domaine Olivier Bernstein

Domaine Olivier Bernstein is one of the youngest domaines in Beaune. Today the domaine is run by a Burgundy wine star and négociant - Olivier Bernstein.

Olivier Bernstein’s wines are famous for being extra fine-tuned.

Top wines of the Domaine Olivier Bernstein are: Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, and Bonnes Mares Grand Cru. Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze 2010 scored 94-96+, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 scored 94-96, and Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2010 scored 93-95+ by the Wine Advocate.

Rober Parker comments on Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze 2010: “There is no need to actually taste the 2010 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze. The exotic, beguiling bouquet is enough to understand the pedigree of what is in the glass. Blackberries, blueberries, licorice and tar develop with air, adding weight and depth to the wine. The characteristic Beze muscle is mostly felt in the wine’s serious, imposing finish. This is another fabulous effort from Olivier Bernstein. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. Olivier Bernstein is one of the younger generation of micro-negociants who owns no vineyards, but rather sources fruit from a variety of vineyards. In just a few years Bernstein has put together an impressive collection of wines from some of the Cote d'Or most prestigious appellations. Bernstein describes 2010 as a vintage with a lot of millerandage (shot berries). The 2010s were vinified with 50% stems and the malos finished in July, which is fairly standard for the year. None of the 2010s had been racked at the time of my visit in late November 2011 and bottling was planned for March and April 2012. Stylistically, these are fleshy, generous wines that stand apart for their textural depth”.

History

2007

In 2007 Olivier Bernstein - born in the music publishers family, established a négociant business Domaine Olivier Bernstein, and till nowadays continues to work on it as a winemaker. Before settling in Beaune, Olivier Bernstein picked the harvest at Domaine Rouget, and found his own Domaine, Mas de la Deveze, in Roussillon.

Since 2007 Olivier Bernstein has managed to buy two of the vineyards he has worked with since the start: Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux and Mazis Chambertin. It is rare for grand cru vineyards to change hands so this is a major coup.

Approach

Domaine Olivier Bernstein has a small production of fine wines. Olivier Bernstein together with his right-hand man Richard Séguin, pick the grapes themselve.

The wines are aged in 100 percent new wood from the tonnellerie Chassin: 70 percent from the forest of Fontainebleau and 30 percent from Jupille.
