History

Château Julia is owned and managed by Sophie Martin, assisted since 2016 by her spouse, Romain Carreau, a son of a wine grower from Blaye, who brings all his knowledge and know-how.

From the 1930s till 2008, the grapes from the estate’s vineyards used to be sent to the La Rose Pauillac cooperative. In 2009 Sophie Martin started to vinify in-house, and, at present, she is working with several consultants on creating peculiar Château Julia’s winemaking style.

Approach

Since 2019, the viticulture of Château Julia has been sustainable, certified HVE, and since 2021, zero herbicide usage has been committed. The vines are regularly tilled, manually stripped, and green-harvested.

The vineyards are placed within the AOCs of Pauillac and Haut-Médoc. The Haut-Médoc vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

The estate produces wines with Merlot dominance in the blends. 100 percent of the grapes from the Pauillac vineyard are used to make Château Julia Pauillac, the usual blend of which is 80 percent Merlot and 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Château Julia Haut-Médoc is usually 60 percent Merlot and 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, while La Petite Julia Haut-Médoc is 60 percent Merlot, 35 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 5 percent Petit Verdot.

Château Julia Pauillac is matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 50 percent of the new. The wine is racked every 3 months.

Château Julia Haut-Médoc is matured for 12 months in French oak barrels.
