Château Brillette is located in Moulis-en-Médoc, Bordeaux. The vineyard covers 45 hectares, planted in AOC Moulis-en-Médoc. The farming has been done according to a sustainable approach, certified level 3 by HVE since 2017. The estate has been owned by the Flageul family since 1975. The wines of the château are concentrated and refined, exquisite after long cellaring. The estate produces Château Brillette Moulis-en-Médoc and Moulis-en-Médoc (2nd wine). The Château Brillette Moulis-en-Médoc 2018 scored 90-92, 2010 scored 90 by the Wine Advocate. Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Château Brillette Moulis-en-Médoc 2018: “The Château Brillette Moulis-en-Médoc 2018 is deep garnet-purple coloured with scents of baked berries, earth and herbs with a tobacco waft. The palate is full-bodied, rich and spicy with bright fruit and a soft texture, finishing refreshing.”

History

Château Brillette has been owned by the Flageul family since 1975. Joen-Louis Flageul and his son Romain Flageul are in charge. The technical director of the estate is Lucile Dijkstra, the cellar-master is Landry Bernard and Eric Boissenot is the external consultant. The Flageul family has invested a lot in the development of the château. A new cellar was built in 2000 and the vineyard was extended from 32 hectares to 55 hectares. Before the French Revolution, Château Brillette was the property of the Le Blanc Mauvezin family, which also owned Château Mauvezin in Moulis. The estate became part of the Périer de Larsan family after the marriage of Pauline Le Blanc de Mauvezin to Jean-Baptiste Germain du Périer de Larsan in 1796. Château Brillette was listed among the finest vineyards of the appellation by the legendary Féret guide of Bordeaux wines in 1874. The Larsan family owned the château for almost a century and the result of their devoted work was recognized with a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle and honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Liège. In 1932, the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification was established and “Château Brillette du Périer” was classified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. In 2018 the Bordeaux wine board awarded the estate with the prize in the Flora and Fauna for sustainable winegrowing. In the 2019 Trophées de Bordeaux, Château Brillette won a prize for its efforts to modernize the region’s wines. In 2020 the sustainable farming fashion of the château was recognized by a Trophée Adelphe. In 2023, the estate was acquired by Château Chasse-Spleen, holdings of which now consist of 125 hectares of vineyard land, creating the largest property of the appellation.

Approach

Certified sustainable level 3 by HVE since 2017

Château Brillette’s vineyards have been farmed according to a sustainable approach, certified level 3 by HVE since 2017. The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (52 percent), Merlot (43 percent) and Petit Verdot (5 percent) at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The average age of vines is 20 years. 60 percent of grapes are used for Château Brillette Moulis-en-Médoc and 40 percent are used for Moulis-en-Médoc (2nd wine). The soils are pebbles and gravel on clay-limestone. Guyot pruning and ploughing are applied, with grass growing between the rows. No pesticides and minimum fungicides are used. The harvesting is mixed - manual and mechanical, followed by the first sorting. The grapes are then destemmed and sorted for the second time. Fermentation and maceration are done following the recommendations of wine consultant, Eric Boissenot. Ageing is carried out in French oak barrels, with 30 to 50 percent new wood from 12 to 16 months. After the maturation, the wines are transferred back into the vats before being blended and bottled at the château the following spring.
