Tasting the Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens 1964 Robert Parker said: “Unfurling in the glass with notions of cassis, blackberries, sweet soil tones, black truffle and smoke, the 1964 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular, with a layered core of remarkably youthful fruit, ripe tannins and a long, sapid finish.”
Claudine Gaunoux’s style is characterized by depth, elegance and concentration.
History
Claudine Gaunoux, the daughter of François Gaunoux, is the current winemaker of Domaine François Gaunoux.
Winemaking has been a family tradition for more than 140 years. The family knowledge passed through generations resulted in high-quality wine made these days. The sons of the forebear of the Gaunoux dynasty, Henri Gaunoux, François Gaunoux and Michel Gaunoux, now make wine separately. They have established two separate domaines in Burgundy: Michel Gaunoux in Pommard, François Gaunoux in Meursault.
Approach
Since 2000 Claudine Gaunoux has been striving to do as much handwork as possible, practicing early pruning and late harvesting. The harvest takes place between September and October.
Red and White grapes are destemmed before vinification. The juice for the white wine is well settled before fermentation, while the red wine is clarified only after pressing. Both wines age in steel vats for two winters and are racked after malolactic fermentation.
The stainless steel vats are controlled by computer and work well, combining modern technology and age-old approaches.
The wines of Domaine François Gaunoux show beat with bottle age, and the domaine keep back extensive stocks for the late release.
