About
Domaine Matrot
Domaine Matrot, previously Domaine Thierry & Pascale Matrot, is located in Meursault, Burgundy. The current winemakers are two sisters, Adele Matrot and Elsa Matrot, who farm the vineyards according to organic principles, but without certification.
One may describe Adele Matrot and Elsa Matrot's wine style as fresh and refined.
The three top wines of the domaine are: Meursault Premier Cru Les Perrières, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Combettes, and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chalumeaux.
The Meursault Premier Cru Les Perrières 2017 scored 94, the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Combettes 2017 scored 93+, and the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chalumeaux 2007 scored 93 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker said: "Revisited after a year in bottle, the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières confirms its promise, unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus oil, crisp green orchard fruit, honeysuckle, crushed chalk and beeswax. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, its elegantly textural attack segueing into a vibrant, tightly wound core, concluding with a mineral finish. Matrot's parcel here is located between those of Jean-Marc Roulot and Armand Heitz."
History
1835
The current winemakers of Domaine Matrot are two sisters, Adele Matrot and Elsa Matrot. They have been in charge of the winemaking processes since 2016. Their parents, Thierry Matrot and Pascale Matrot have managed the domaine since 1983 until their daughters took over the vineyards.
The domaine itself has a very long history, dating back to the 19th century. The family estate was founded in 1835 by Simon Boillot.
Claude Matrot succeeded his father, Simon Boillot, and extended the vineyards buying Les Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumeaux Premier Cru, Meursault Blagny Premier Cru and Blagny La Pièce sous le Bois Premier Cru.
Joseph Matrot, the son of Claude Matrot, married Marguerite Amoignon. Marguerite Amoignon succeeded an estate in Meursault, which is still the heart of Domaine Matrot.
Pierre Matrot, Joseph Matrot's son, became a winegrower in 1937. In time he bought vines in Meursault, Auxey-Duresses and Monthelie.
Thierry Matrot, son of Pierre Matrot, obtained his viticulture-oenology diploma in Beaune and worked a lot on the reputation for the wines of Domaine Matrot. Thierry Matrot and Pascale Matrot expanded the area of the estate with Meursault, Auxey-Duresses and Bourgogne Pinot Noir.
Elsa Matrot, daughter of Thierry Matrot and Pascale Matrot, joined the estate in 2008; after a BTS wine trade in Montpellier and a university degree in viticulture-oenology at the University of Sciences in Dijon, Elsa joined the farm.
In 2010 Adèle Matrot, another daughter of Thierry Matrot, joined the family business after obtaining a master's degree at Grenoble Ecole de Management, and a master's degree specializing in the wine trade at ESC Dijon and professional training in viticulture-oenology at the CFPPA in Beaune.
Approach
Organic since 2000 without certification
Vineyards of the Domaine Matrot are farmed according to organic principles. Despite organic farming since 2000, the vineyards haven't been certified yet.
The whites are pressed, usually not settled, unless the lees quality is doubted. Then a slow fermentation takes place in the oak barrels that don't have any new wood. White wines are the exception.
The red wines are made without stems. The longest-lived red wine of the domaine is the Volnay Santenots.
The wines are bottled before the next harvest and can be tasted fresh and refined.
