About
Domaine de Montille
Domaine de Montille holds 20 hectares and is located in Volnay, Burgundy. Montille is a blend of domaine and négociant, bearing the same name. Étienne de Montille, the winemaker, farms the vineyards according to a biodynamic approach, but without certificate.
Étienne de Montille’s wines have great terroirs because of a good proportion of old vines and are characterized by authenticity, purity, elegance and balance.
The top wines of the domaine are Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane, Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens Bas Cuvée Hubert, and Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds.
The Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 2015 scored 95 - 97, the Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens Bas Cuvée Hubert 2015 scored 94 - 96, and the Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds 2015 scored 94 - 96 by the Wine Advocate.
Tasting wine at Domaine de Montille Robert Parker said: “The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane is 100% whole bunch matured in 65% new oak. It has a very intense bouquet, perhaps a little more opaque than the regular Malconsorts, gradually opening with grey slate aromas tincturing the dark berry fruit. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannin, supremely well-judged acidity, harmonious and focused with a long and tensile finish. Just a fabulous Malconsorts.”
History
Domaine de Montille is managed by Étienne de Montille, who took over the winemaking business from his father, Hubert de Montille.
Domaine de Montille was created in the 1730s, before the French revolution. It got its name after the union of Marie Eléonore Chauvelot de Chevannes and Étienne Joseph Marie Léonce Bizouard de Montille, the grandfather of Hubert de Montille.
Étienne de Montille senior was one of the founders of Société des Agriculteurs de France. Étienne de Montille preferred to "sell vines than fields, as fields were more profitable". His son, Hubert de Montille, was a lawyer and lived a double life between the vines and the court. In 1947, right after the first harvest, he broke the custom of selling wine to négociants. Hubert de Montille was one of the first to believe in the future of the bottle.
In 1983, Étienne de Montille started working at the domaine. He learned from his father and through his oenology studies until 1990, when he took over the vinification. In 1995, he became co-manager and began to move the domaine towards organic farming.
Étienne de Montille took complete control in 2001, starting biodynamic farming. However, he remained faithful to the vision he learned from his father's side: authenticity, purity, elegance and balance.
Approach
Biodynamic
Domaine de Montille is farmed according to biodynamic principles but without certification. The domaine is better known for its red wines.
There has been both change and continuity compared to Hubert de Montille’s time. Hubert used to capitalize, only up to 12 percent. However, since grapes are riper now, that issue no longer applies. The preference is for whole-bunch vinification, as long as the vines are mature.
