About
Domaine Pierre Morey
Domaine Pierre Morey is located in Meursault, Burgundy and holds 10 hectares of vineyards. Anne Morey manages the vineyards according to biodynamic and organic principles.
Anne Morey's reds can be on the rustic side when young, partly the vineyard holdings, partly the style, but do age very well. The white wines are deep with immense promise for the future.
The top wines of the domaine are: Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Meursault Premier Cru Les Perrières, and Meursault Tesson.
The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 scored 95 - 97, the Meursault Premier Cru Les Perrières 2008 scored 96, and the Meursault Tesson 2020 scored 92 - 94 by the Wine Advocate.
Tasting Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020, Robert Parker said: "Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, orange oil, beeswax, hazelnuts, white flowers and bread dough, the 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, rich and multidimensional, with a textural attack that segues into a layered and impressively taut, chiseled mid-palate. Built to age, this will reward patience. As usual, readers should note that this wine is identical to the Bâtard-Montrachet released under the Morey-Blanc label."
History
Anne Morey currently manages Domaine Pierre Morey. The previous winemaker was Pierre Morey, Anne Morey's father. The domaine collaborates with the Maison Morey-Blanc, a merchant company founded by Domaine Pierre Morey, to compensate for the end of some sharecropper contracts.
In 1798 Alexis Morey moved to Meursault to marry Mlle Millot. And so the Meursault branch of the Morey's family, originally from Chassagne, came about.
In 1935 Auguste Morey, the father of Pierre Morey, became a sharecropper at the Domaine des Comtes Lafon, 14 hectares of which have been divided between nine sharecroppers. By the end of 1971, Pierre Morey took over his father's right to the lease.
In 1984 the Lafon family decided to take back their vineyards. Pierre Morey was hired as general manager of Domaine Leflaive (from 1988 until retirement in summer 2008), while he also set up his négociant business, Morey-Blanc. He has also been able to buy a few plots of vines himself, as has his daughter Anne Morey. The latest acquisition in 2019 was part of the Clos de Meix Tavaux.
Approach
Biodynamic since 1997, Organic since 1991
The domaine ultimately moved to biodynamics in 1997. Starting from 1991, Pierre Morey had been cultivating vineyards organically, but already applying biodynamic approaches.
Anne continues her father's methods of vinification by sorting the grapes, crushing them before pressing, allowing them to settle for a day but keeping most of the lees, with stirring after the fermentation through to Christmas. The wines are racked into older wood in the summer, then bottled after 18 to 20 months.
