About

Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge

Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge is located in Auxey-Duresses, Burgundy. The territories of the domaine cover 7 hectares and include premiers crus in Auxey-Duresses, Pommard and Meursault. The domaine is managed by Gilles Lafouge according to the organic approach, but without certification. The wines of the domaine show a great balance between mineral flavors with firm acidities and the dense, expressive fruit with the expected degree of ripeness.

Top wines of the domaine are: Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru La Chapelle, Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru Les Duresses and Meursault Les Meix Chavaux. The Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru La Chapelle 2017 scored 93+, the Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru Les Duresses 2017 scored 93 and the Meursault Les Meix Chavaux 2017 scored 92 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker comments on The Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru La Chapelle 2017: “The finest of Lafouge's reds this year is the 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle, a lovely rendition of this emblematic bottling that wafts from the glass with aromas of smoky cassis, plums, cocoa nib, rose petals and candied peel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with good concentration at the deep and layered core, velvety structuring tannins and ripe acids. Combining the elegance of Lafouge's Duresses with the structure of his Climat du Val, the La Chapelle is the more serious and complete wine in the cellar.”

Approach

Organic, without certification

The vineyards of the Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge are farmed organically, but without certification.

Short pruning is done each season; the late harvesting is done manually. Fermentations are conducted on wild yeast. Stirring settled lees back into white wines is minimal; natural clarification is conducted. About 10 to 25 percent of new oak is used.

Gilles Lafouge holds old vines, tenderly cultivates soils and follows classical winemaking principles. Cuverie and cellar are clean and well-organized, proving the dedication to high winemaking standards.
