Weingut Knoll

Weingut Knoll is a 22 hectares large winery in Dürnstein, Wachau. The winemaker is Emmerich Junior and is the owner of the family business.

The top wines of Weingut Knoll are Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Vinothekfüllung", Loibner Riesling Smaragd "Vinothekfüllung", and Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese.

Emmerich Junior's wines are elegant, well-balanced, and aromatic. The Smaragd wines often have power and high alcohol level. Emmerich Knoll wines have great ageing potential.

Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Vinothekfüllung" 2019 scored 99, Loibner Riesling Smaragd "Vinothekfüllung" 2019 scored 97+, and Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2009 scored 97 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd "Vinothekfüllung": "The 2019 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Vinothekfüllung opens with a deep, complex, nuanced, refreshing, mineral, lemon-scented, crystalline, highly refined and elegant bouquet. On the palate, this is a dense, rich and extract-sweet, intense and powerful, highly finessed and elegant, incredibly long and aromatic Veltliner of great class and style. [...]"

History

Weingut Knoll is the property of the Emmerich family. Emmerich Junior is the owner and winemaker there.

The first wine, bottled under the family label, appeared on the market in the 1950s and became one of the most recognisable wines in Austria throughout the following decades. The labels with baroque motifs of Sankt Urban appeared on the bottles in the 1962 vintage and are still unchanged.

Emmerich Junior gradually took over the winery management from his father, Emmerich Knoll Senior, one of the region's most respected winemakers.

Approach

The vineyards of Weingut Emmerich Knoll are mostly located in Loiben and across the border in Kremstal, where they own a hectare in Steiner Pfaffenberg.

The vineyards south-facing Loibenberg are the origin of rich, broad wines of tremendous appeal. However, the most celebrated site is Schütt, with a soil of a good deal of primary rock and rubble. The wines, made of Grüner Veltliner and/or Riesling wines, can be very long-lived.

The high ripeness also allowed Knoll to produce Beerenauslese and TBA wines in such vintages as 1998, 2000, 2006, 2007, and 2015. Emmerich Knoll also produces sweet Auslese and Prädikat wines.

Knoll produces a "Vinothekfüllung" from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, depending on the vintage. This blend of the best grapes from Loibenberg and Kreutles can include some botrytised fruit that gives the bottling additional weight and richness.

Emmerich Knoll grows several grape varieties: Blauburgunder, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Muskateller, Riesling, and Traminer. Muskateller and Gelben Traminer wines have been produced almost every year since 1988.

All Smaragd-type wines are aged in old, wooden casks and bottled after September of the following year.
