Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs in the elegant red fruit and earthy layers, finishing on a long, lingering, provocative mineral note. 348 cases produced."

History

1994

Hartford Family Winery is owned by the Hartford family, represented by Don and Jenny Hartford, along with their children, Hailey Hartford Murray and McLean Jackson Hartford. Jeff Stewart is the estate's winemaker and general manager. Don Hartford has dedicated over twenty-five years to winemaking and winery management. In pursuing his passion, Don returned to one of his early loves - land and farming. Don and Jenny Hartford bought the property in 1992. In 1996 Hartford Family Winery released its inaugural vintage consisting of two Pinot Noirs and one old-vine Zinfandel, which garnered high acclaim from esteemed wine publications such as The Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits. Between 1997 and 1999, the wines of Hartford Family Winery had the honour of being served at the White House on multiple occasions. With remarkable success, Hartford Family Winery achieved consecutive Harvest Fair Sweepstakes awards. In 2001, their 1999 Hartford Court Laura's Chardonnay won the Sweepstakes White Wine, earning the title of Best White Wine of Show at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. In 2004, Wine & Spirits recognised Hartford Family Winery as an Artisan Winery of the Year, and in 2008, the winery was honoured as the Winery of the Year. In 2020, Hailey Hartford Murray assumed the role of President and Co-Owner at Hartford Family Winery, continuing the family's legacy.

Approach

Hartford Family Winery specialises in a diverse selection of single-vineyard wines, including Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and old-vine Zinfandels. Their Pinot Noir grapes are carefully sourced from renowned sub-appellations of Sonoma County, such as the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Sonoma Coast, Carneros and Anderson Valley. The winery strongly emphasises sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming practices, prioritising tight vine spacing, low yields and dry farming methods, ensuring the utmost environmental care. All wines of Hartford Family Winery originate from its own vineyards or come according to longstanding relationships with trusted vineyard partners. Before fermentation, the whole berries and juice undergo a cold soaking process in chilled tanks for nearly five days. This step extracts additional flavours and supple tannins that are not attainable through the warmer fermentation process. The wines are aged in tightly-grained French oak barrels for 11 to 15 months. The new French oak percentages generally range from 30 to 100, contributing to the complexity of the final wines. Most of the wines are unfined and unfiltered, preserving the mouth-filling flavours and textures that make them exceptional.
