Domaine Gérard Thomas
Domaine Gérard Thomas is based in Saint-Aubin, Burgundy. The vineyards of the domaine cover 12 hectares in the appellations of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin itself. Sisters Anne-Sophie Thomas and Isabelle Thomas are in charge of the winemaking at the domaine. The domaine holds a monopole Saint Aubin Premier Cru Clos de Pitangeret.
The wines of the domaine are soft while retaining a good crisp acidity, domaines’ famous Chardonnays are oaky with precise fresh fruit and gentle caramel, honeyed flavour.
Top wines of the domaine are: Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien, Meursault Premier Cru Blagny and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes. The Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien 2013 scored 90, Meursault Premier Cru Blagny 2016 scored 89, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes 2013 scored 89 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien 2013: “The 2013 Saint Aubin Premier Cru les Murgers des Dents du Chien offers a little more energy on the nose compared to the Champ Tirant: nicely focused with plenty of citrus fruit and apple blossom. The palate is harmonious on the entry with lovely grilled walnut and smoky notes lending it a Meursault-like persona. Good length and persistence in the mouth rounds off one of this domaine's best 2013s.”
History
Sisters Anne-Sophie Thomas and Isabelle Thomas are the fourth generation of the family to be running Domaine Gérard Thomas. Their father, eponymous, Gérard Thomas had been in charge of the domaine since 1982. He had been expanding the domaine in Cotes de Beaune since the 1980s through acquisitions in Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet.
The domaine was created by Hippolyte Thomas, Gérard Thomas's grandfather.
Approach
Harvesting is made by hand with careful handling. It prevents bunches from oxidation and provides optimum ripeness.
The whites are fermented in barrels with 25 percent of new oak used. While 10 months in cask, regular lees stirring to add depth is conducted.
