About

Weingut Bernhard Huber

Weingut Bernhard Huber is a 28 hectares large property in Malterdingen, Baden. The Huber family is the owner, and Julian Huber is the winemaker. The vineyards are in conversion to organic viticulture. The winery is a member of VDP, Deutsches Barrique Forum and Vinissima.

The wines, crafted at this winery are smoky, flinty, taut, concentrated and complex and full of elegance, freshness and purity. Weingut Bernhard Huber wines resemble their terroir well and can be easily mixed with wines from Burgundy when tasted blind. The top wines of Weingut Bernhard Huber are: Sommerhalde Spätburgunder VDP. Grosses Gewächs and Wildenstein Spätburgunder VDP. Grosses Gewächs.

The Sommerhalde Spätburgunder VDP. Grosses Gewächs 2018 scored 96, the Wildenstein Spätburgunder VDP. Grosses Gewächs 2017 scored 94, and the Chardonnay 2012 scored 91 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Sommerhalde Spätburgunder VDP. Grosses Gewächs 2018: “Huber's 2018 Sommerhalde Spätburgunder GG is beautifully bright and floral on the pure, refined and terroir-driven nose. With red currant aromas and crushed stones, there's beautiful freshness here! Full-bodied, tight and fresh on the palate, this is a remarkably juicy, finessed, vital and tensioned Pinot with sustainable vitality, mineral grip and inner concentration. The heat of the 2018 vintage is far less represented here than in some of Huber's other Pinots, and the finish, namely, makes this a current favourite from Julian's 2018 collection. Fantastic! You don't have to wait to enjoy the wine, although you can certainly do so. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2020.”

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chardonnay 2012: “From 65-year-old vines, Huber's 2012 Chardonnay offers a clear, deep and complex nose with honey and fennel blossom flavours intermixed with intense chalky flavours. Pure and salty on the palate, but also intense and juicy, this firmly structured and persistent Chardonnay is a great character.”

History

1987

Weingut Bernhard Huber is the property of the Huber family, headed by Barbara Huber and her son Julian Huber. Julian Huber is the winemaker.

In 1987 Bernhard and Barbara decided to start making their own wine. Before that they used to deliver their grapes to the local cooperative. Goal was to have control in every step towards making great wine. Soon they rose to the top of the German wine scene. In 2014 Berhard passed away and it forced Julian to take over the winemaking. He gave the wines even more freshness and delicacy and they are seen as the pinnacle of German Pinot.

The vines in Malterdingen have been cultivated since the thirteenth century. Cistercian Monks were the first to bring Pinot Noir there.

Approach

Organic

The vineyards of Weingut Bernhard Huber are located on the famous Kaiserstuhl slopes in the Baden village of Malterdingen. The winery is currently undergoing conversion to organic viticulture.

The oldest vines were planted in the 1950s. There are 5 grape varieties in the vineyards: Spätburgunder (70 percent), Chardonnay (15 percent), Weißburgunder (7 percent), Grauburgunder (7 percent), and Müller-Thurgau (1 percent). The harvesting is done early, vinified plot-by-plot to highlight the terroirs.

The red wines are vinified with parts of whole bunches. Malolactic fermentation occurs in French oak barrels. Bernhard Huber's wines mature for up to 18 months in oak barrels before bottling.

The wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

The winery is a member of VDP, Deutsches Barrique Forum and Vinissima.
