About
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard & Fils
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard & Fils is a winegrower that makes super stylish and harmonious wines in Vosne-Romanée. Nowadays vineyards are farmed according to organic principles of viticulture, and the wine style continues to evolve across the generations. Since 2011 Sébastien Cathiard has been a winemaker of the domaine. Sébastien’s wines are characterized by being less seductive in youth but likely to be more interesting in maturity.
Top wines of the domaine are: Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Malconsorts, and Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru. Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Malconsorts 1949 scored 98, and vintage 2015 scored 96-98 by the Wine Advocate, Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2015 scored 96-98. Robert Parker comments on Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Malconsorts 1949: “Nothing less than a spellbinding wine, the 1949 Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Malconsorts constitutes one of the earliest bottlings by Albert and his son, Andre Cathiard. The clarity in the glass bodes well. The nose is bewitching with gorgeous bacon fat and Italian cured meat notes infusing the beautifully defined, dusky mulberry and sous-bois aromas. Later, there are touches of brown sugar but though it becomes more diffuse, it does not oxidize. The palate is beautifully balanced with perfect acidity. It has held on to Les Malconsorts’ silky texture and yet at the same time there is also the structure and backbone that this vineyard engenders. Tense right to the finish, this is about as good as mature Burgundy gets. Ethereal”.
History
Since 2011 Sébastien Cathiard is the current and a fourth-generation winemaker, who joined his father, Sylvaine Cathiard, in 2006 when they formed the estate of Sylvain Cathiard & Fils. Currently, the Domaine Sylvain Cathiard & Fils holds vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Romanée Saint-Vivant and Vosne-Romanée (Aux Malconsort, En Orveaux, Aux Reignots, and Les Suchots vineyards).
The roots of the domaine go back to Albert Cathiard, great-grandfather of the current winemaker, who is a foundling from Savoie.
Albert Cathiard had been working for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Lamarche, before he bought a few plots of vineyards and started his own domaine.
Approach
Organic
The vineyards are farmed by Domaine Sylvain Cathiard close to the organic approach. Before vinification, the grapes are destemmed, and given a long cold soak. In the cellar, there is little new oak: none for the generic wines, 50 percent for village wines, and 50 to 65 percent for crus.
