The top wines produced at Weingut Prinz are Riesling trocken Großes Gewächs Hallgarten Schönhell, Riesling trocken Großes Gewächs Hallgarten Jungfer, and Spätburgunder trocken "Reserve" Hallgartener Hendelberg.

The wines of Fred Prinz are fruity, rough and elegant.

Riesling trocken Großes Gewächs Hallgarten Schönhell 2020 scored 92, Riesling trocken Großes Gewächs Hallgarten Jungfer 2020 scored 92, and Spätburgunder trocken "Reserve" Hallgartener Hendelberg 2018 scored 90 by Gerhard Eichelmann.

Gerhard Eichelmann notes, “[...] the Jungfer Großes Gewächs shows expansive tannins and is very opulent but builds more tension with air. [...] Over time, a rather dominant sweetish fruit reveals itself, which will recede into the background over the years. [...] The great plus of the wine is its aftertaste, which allows it to oscillate skilfully back and forth between fruit.”

History

Weingut Prinz is the holding of the Prinz family, and Fred Prinz is the winemaker.

The Prinz family have been selling grapes to the local cooperative for years. In 1991 the first 3,000 bottles under their own label were sold. Fred Prinz ran the business as a part-time job after his studies. He worked for Breuer and then for the Kloster Eberbach state winery.

In 2003 the Prinz family took over the local wine business with its winemaking facilities. Fred Prinz fully dedicated himself to the winery since 2004. His efficient management led to the VDP membership (2005).

Approach

Organic, certified by EU-Bio

The vineyards of Weingut Prinz are cultivated according to organic principles and are EU-Bio certified. The winery has been a member of VDP.Rheingau since 2005.

The parcels are scattered across Hallgarten in the Schönhell (partly sandy, partly stony loess loam soils), Hendelberg (blue and green slate, phyllite) and Jungfer (quartzite with loess loam deposits). The main grape varieties are Riesling (93 percent), and Spätburgunder (5 percent); however, there are also some small plantings of Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer.

The wines are almost entirely vinified in stainless steel. Spätburgunder is matured in small quantities in wood. The base wines are mostly fermented with pure yeasts, all higher quality wines with natural yeasts, although Fred Prinz sometimes adds some yeast if the wines don't ferment far enough.
