Weingut Burggarten

Weingut Burggarten is a 15 hectares large property in Bad Neuenahr - Ahrweiler - Heppingen, Ahr. The Schäfer Family is the owner, Paul Schäfer is the winemaker. The winery has been a member of the VDP.Ahr since 2019.

The top wines of the winery are Spätburgunder "GG" Walporzheimer Kräuterberg, Spätburgunder "GG" Walporzheimer Alte Lay, Spätburgunder "GG" Neuenahrer Schieferley, and Spätburgunder "GG" Neuenahrer Sonnenberg.

The wines produced at Weingut Burggarten are complex, balanced and aromatic.

Spätburgunder "GG" Walporzheimer Kräuterberg 2019 and Spätburgunder "GG" Walporzheimer Alte Lay 2019 scored 91, Spätburgunder "GG" Neuenahrer Schieferley 2019 and Spätburgunder "GG" Neuenahrer Sonnenberg 2019 scored 90 by Gerhard Eichelmann.

Gerhard Eichelmann notes, “[...] the Frühburgunder from the Sonnenberg has a very open bouquet, is floral, and shows lots of fruit: red and dark, a good structure, lots of grip and tannins. [...] The Spätburgunder from the Sonnenberg shows a lot of ripe fruit and some smoky notes, very subtle chocolate in the background, and is full-bodied, powerful, has ripe fruit, good structure and grip. [...] The wine from the Schieferlay has smoky notes, delicate freshness and fruit; it is clear, precise and gripping, yet still youthful. [...] The Spätburgunder from the Burggarten is still too youthful, shows toast and spices, and is also clearly different in the mouth than its counterparts, having more power and being still young. [...] At the top there are two Walporzheimer Großer Gewächse. [...] The Alte Lay shows good concentration, lots of ripe fruit and some spices, is full-bodied and juicy and has good structure and substance. [...] It is spicy and haunting, has a lot of ripe fruit and power, fullness and structure, and is a wine with potential overall.”

History

Weingut Burggarten is the property of the Schäfer Family. Paul Michael Schäfer is the winemaker.

Paul Schäfer and Heiko Schäfer took over the business in July 2018. They have been active members of the Heppingen winegrowers' association. All three brothers, who are the fourth generation vignerons, have a winegrowing education.

A guest house was attached to the winery in 2005. The Schäfer family was also affected by the flood disaster; the clean-up work was completed in time so that the 2021 harvest was processed in their own cellar.

Approach

The vineyards of Weingut Burggarten are farmed with much respect to the environment. The winery became a member of VDP.Ahr in 2019.

The parcels are planted with six main grape varieties: Spätburgunder (70 percent), Frühburgunder (10 percent), Riesling (5 percent), Weißburgunder (5 percent), Chardonnay (5 percent), and Grauburgunder (5 percent). There are also some tiny amounts of Portugieser (with vines up to 100 years old), Dornfelder, and a little Zweigelt (planted in 1982).

The vineyards are scattered across Heimersheimer Burggarten (heavy clay soils), Neuenahrer Sonnenberg and Neuenahrer Schieferlay (greywacke and greywacke slate), and Ahrweiler Ursulinengarten (gravel by the river, heavier soil further up).

Paul Schäfer, the winemaker, started bottling the wines later and using barriques for ageing.
