About

Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot

Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is one of the top wineries of Vosne-Romanèe. The domaine’s holdings cover 11 hectares of unique, high-class Burgundy vineyards. The family produces wines from Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. In addition, they have an outstanding range of premier cru and grand cru; some of them are Vosne Suchots Premier Cru, Echezeaux Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru and small portions of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru and Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru.

The domaine grows vines according to the organic practices but without being certified. The current owners are Jean-Pierre and Yves Confuron.

The top wines of the domaine are 1988 vintages of Clos Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots. The Clos Vougeot 1988 scored 96, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots scored 93 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker noted Clos Vougeot 1988: “The Clos Vougeot was mind-blowing, and I lament the fact that only 75 cases are available for the entire world. It was one of the most concentrated, dramatic red burgundies I tasted from the 1988 vintage, and textually, resembled the port-like Bordeaux produced in 1947. Extremely velvety, supple, but oozing with cassis and raspberry-like fruit, this intensely concentrated, fascinating wine with its dazzling bouquet and flavours should last for at least two decades. All of Confuron's wines are bottled unfiltered.”

The Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot’s wines are crafted for the long haul, and their style is often described as those of deep colours, formidable intensity and fruit flavours.

History

1964

Today, the winery is owned by the sixth generation of vignerons - Jean-Pierre and Yves Confuron. They took over from Jack Confuron and Bernadette Cotetidot, who founded Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot in 1964.

Jack Confuron was one of three sons of Joseph Confuron and Simone Jayer - the first cousin of Henry Jayer. The roots of the Confuron family go back to the 17th century, the reign period of King Louis the 14th.

Approach

Organic, not certified

The farming is implemented in accordance with organic practices. Still, there is no intent to be certified, as the domaine isn't interested in following the strict rules of the certification agencies.

In the vineyards, they have never used any synthetic herbicides or pesticides. Considerable attention is paid to regular ploughing, short pruning and green harvesting. Harvesting is conveyed relatively later than most to get the maximum ripeness of the stems. The sorting is done twice - in the vineyard and cellar.

The practice of whole-bunch fermentation is the family tradition followed through the years. The next step is maceration for 2-3 weeks and vertical pressing. Ageing lasts for two years without any racking; the percentage of new wood varies from 15 to 20 percent. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Late harvesting, whole-bunch fermentation and the absence of fining and filtering are the defining markers of the Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot wine style.
