Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin

About

Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin

Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin is an old family owned domaine in Chablis, Burgundy.

The winemaker, Benoît Droin, manages the 26 hectares of vineyards.

Benoît Droin's wines are immediately identifiable through their generous and substantial body and mineral precision. Every wine shows its personality - from the chiseled minerality of Vaucoupin to the roundness of Vosgros, or the purity and elegance of Blanchots to the heavyweight Valmur. Mont de Milieu is particularly exotic, Montée de Tonnerre shows a sunshine warmth, Grenouilles is the spiciest.

The top wines of the domaine are: Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles, Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos, and Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir.

The Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2014 scored 96, the Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2019 scored 95+, and the Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 2014 scored 95 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2014: "Tasted blind at the Burgfest annual tasting, Jean Paul Droin's 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles was one of the standouts of the Chablis flights. It has compelling scents of gunflint and slate, very detailed and articulating its terroir with immense clarity. With time there is a hint of blood orange that surfaces. The palate is very well balanced with a vibrant thread of acidity, extremely well poised with clever and subtle use of oak. It seems to just shimmer with nervous energy and it will be giving immense pleasure to Chablis lovers for many years to come. Bravo Benoît!"

History

Benoît Droin, the 14th generation vigneron, has been managing winemaking at Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin since 1999.

The history of the Droin’s as vignerons goes back to at least 1620. Over the years, the Droin’s have built up excellent holdings of both premiers and grands crus, and are still making them to a very high standard.

In 1866, Edme-Auguste Droin received a silver tastevin engraved with the imperial arms from the hands of Emperor Napoléon III, who was passing through Auxerre.

It was Benoit's father, Jean-Paul Droin, who built the reputation of the domaine.

Benoît joined the domain in 1999, after obtaining a diploma at Wine College in Beaune and a national oenology diploma in Dijon, Benoît Droin joined the estate as the vigneron.

Approach

Benoît Droin's father, Jean-Paul Droin, brought Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin its reputation.

Benoît runs Droin, a more sophisticated operation from a large modern winery almost in the shadow of the grands crus. He has revised his pruning system and significantly reduced yields. The vineyards are

now either ploughed or, if too vigorous, grassed between the rows. Benoît Droin likes to pick relatively early by machine.

The wines are fermented with natural yeasts. Petit Chablis, Chablis, premiers crus Vaucoupin and Côte de Léchet, and grand cru Blanchots are all fermented and matured in tank. Vaillons, Mont de Milieu and Montée de Tonnerre get 25 percent barrel and maturation, 35 percent for Vosgros and Vaudésir, 40 percent for Montmains and Valmur, peaking at 50 percent for Fourchaume, Grenouilles and Les Clos. The age of the oak and the choice of tonnelier may vary according to the cuvée.

The barrel component is blended back with the tank portion in the spring after the harvest for bottling in the late summer.
