About
Domaine Drouhin-Vaudon
Domaine Drouhin-Vaudon, known by its previous name as Domaine de Vaudon, is located in Chichée, near Chablis, Burgundy. The total area of its vineyards is 38 hectares, which are farmed according to a biodynamic principle by Denis Marie, the current winemaker at the domaine.
Denis Marie’s wine is elegant. Brilliant color, with hints of green. Typical Chablis nose, where aromas of citrus fern and even salty sensations predominate. On the palate: vigorous and lively, but in a quiet mode. A lot of finesse and balance
The three top wines of the domaine are: Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos, Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir, and Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons.
The Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2014 scored 94, the Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 2012 scored 94, and the Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons 2017 scored 93 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2014: “The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos as picked on September 17 and has the highest alcohol degree and still is a modest 13.3%. The nose is quite complex and cohesive with yellow flowers and honeysuckle, a touch of granite underneath. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, more weight and fruit intensity than the Vaudésir, and then it fans out with confidence towards the finish with some lovely candied orange peel notes. This is a superb Les Clos with a long future ahead.”
History
Denis Marie is the winemaker of Domaine Drouhin-Vaudon, owned by Frederic Drouhin, a geat-grandchild of Joseph Drouhin.
Robert Drouhin, Frederic Drouhin’s father, bought vineyard holdings in Chablis in the 1960s. The Drouhin property in Chablis was previously known as the Domaine de Vaudon and was based at the Moulin de Vaudon in Chichée, where the grapes are pressed. Currently, the juice is sent down to Beaune for vinification.
The Moulin de Vaudon is an 18th-century watermill on the river Serein, close to the grand cru vineyards of Chablis. This historical mill is the headquarters of the domaine in Chablis.
Robert Drouhin expanded the holdings in the Cote de Nuits to the current size. He purchased some best plots on Kimmeridgian soils.
For many years the wine was sold under the Joseph Drouhin label. In 2008, they changed the name of the label.
Approach
Biodynamic since 1999
Domaine Drouhin-Vaudon has been practicing biodynamic approaches since the early 1990s. Denis Marie reduced the amount of copper and sulfur used in the vineyard. All the vineyards are worked by horse apart from one because it is too steep, the village is picked mechanically and the premier and grand crus manually.
The premiers crus are aged in stainless steel vats, and the grands crus in 300- and 500-hectoliter barrels. Denis Marie gradually reduced the use of new oak.
