Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Blanc 2019: "Guiberteau's 2019 Saumur Les Moulins comes from a vineyard that was planted in 1935 and has always been renewed where necessary until 2008. Located in the communes of Montreuil-Bellay, Brézé and Bizay, this Chenin Blanc is from organically farmed clay and limestone soils. The must derived from whole-cluster pressing was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on the fine lees in a stainless steel tank. The wine has a lean but intense and tensioned character and displays a pure, fresh and chalky nose with intense and refreshing dashes of lemon juice intertwined with some flinty and floral notes. Dry, elegant and in a subtle way also rich and juicy on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and finessed, vibrantly fresh and tightly structured Chenin with substance, grip and complexity. The finish is sustainable, stimulating and salty. The 2019 reveals exciting grip composed of minerals, tannins and chalky acidity. This is a superb effort from Guiberteau and highly recommended for all Chenin (and Chablis) fans. Tasted in May 2021."

History

Located 12 km south of Saumur, Domaine Guiberteau has been producing Saumur appellation wines for decades. Since 1996 the property has been run by Romain Guiberteau. He has grown only two grape varieties: Cabernet Franc and Chenin from 17 hectares. The  vineyard extends over such communes: Bizay, Brézé, Chacé, Montreuil Bellay and Saint-Just-sur-Dive.

Approach

The vineyard of Domaine Guiberteau is treated with respect to nature. The 17 hectares of plots has been cultivated following organic principles since 2003. The vines' age at Guiberteaus' property varies from 5 to over 80 years old.

Once the grapes are hand-harvested, the vinification stage starts. The red wines macerate in vats. Fermentation and aging then continue in stainless steel or wooden vats, or in barrels depending on the cuvée.

The minimum amount of sulfur necessary before bottling is added. There is no addition of yeasts, enzymes, or stabilizers.
