Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots Cuvée La réserve de l'Obédience 2010: “White truffles, orange zest and mint lead to layers of complex, nuanced fruit in the 2010 Chablis Les Blanchots Reserve de l’Obedience. This is an especially full-bodied, racy Chablis backed up by serious richness to match its nuanced, multi-dimensional personality. Laroche’s Reserve de l’Obedience is one of the most distinctive wines I tasted on my trip to Chablis this year. The 2010 was aged in 80 percent oak and 20 percent steel.”
History
Since 2011, the winemaker in charge of Domaine Laroche is Grégory Viennois.
The history of the domaine starts with the abbots of Saint Martin de Tours, who were running away from Normans and subsequently settled in Chablis in 867. There is allegedly a niche with relics of Saint Martin hidden in a tower of Obédiencerie de Chablis.
The Obédiencerie de Chablis as a wine producer was mentioned first in 1128. The estate was the biggest winemaker in Chablis from the 15th to the 17th century.
At the beginning of the French Revolution, in 1789, Obédiencerie de Chablis became private property.
Michel Laroche is the fifth-generation vigneron. In 2009, after setting up a successful winemaking empire, he decided to merge it with Maison Jeanjean, owned by the Advini group.
At present, Michel Laroche is totally devoted to Domaine d’Henri, managed by him and his daughters, Cécile and Margaux Laroche.
Approach
Certified sustainable by HVE
The vineyards of Domaine Laroche are cultivated according to the sustainable concept, being certified HVE.
A lot of attention is paid to the grapes' health and balance. No weed killers, pesticides, or anti-botrytis treatments are applied. Instead, Grégory Viennois experiments with natural remedies using nettle and valerian.
Harvesting is mainly done by machine. The grapes are pressed on the 13th-century wooden wine press.
Depending on the cuvée, fermentation is carried out with the help of cultured yeasts and takes place in a mix of tank, foudre and barrel.
Chablis Cuvée Vieille Voye is harvested by hand, then fermented and matured in foudre.
Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots Cuvée Réserve de l'Obédience is made by way of various grapes' blind tasting to choose what will fit best to the Réserve de l'Obédience.
