Domaine d'Eugénie

About

Domaine d'Eugénie

The Domaine d'Eugénie is an estate located in Vosne-Romanée in the heart of Burgundy. Frédéric Engerer is a current manager and runs the 4.51 hectares domaine together with two winemakers. With humility, patience, and constantly searching for excellence, this team is focused on highlighting the richness and potential of terroirs that they possess.

Top wines of the domaine are: Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru and Clos Vougeot Grand Cru. Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru 2015 scored 96+, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 scored 94-96, and Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2012 scored 94-96 by the Wine Advocate. Robert Parker comments on Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru 2015 are: “Tasted blind, the 2015 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru showed extraordinarily well, far surpassing my expectations and proving that interesting things are finally afoot at this domaine. Unfurling in the glass with a classy bouquet of ripe wild berries, rose petals, incense, candied peel and espresso roast, the wine is full-bodied, ample and lavish, with satiny tannins, a fleshy but succulent core of fruit, juicy balancing acids and the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes the vintage's best wines. While this address's debut efforts were somewhat uninspiring, this superb Grands Echézeaux is the real thing”.

History

Artemis, the holding company of François Pinault is a current owner, who bought the Domaine René Engel in July 2006, in a year after the death of Philippe Engel. Since, François Pinault has renamed the domaine.

Artemis also owns Château Latour in Bordeaux and Château Grillet in Rhône.

The roots of the domaine go back to René Engel, who founded the domaine shortly after the First World War. The latest family owner was Philippe Engel, who was running the domaine with energy and passion from 1981 to 2005.

Approach

Nowadays, the yields are seriously lower than in Phillippe’s Engel days. Therefore, to have fruitful vines, the team scrupulously looks after the vineyards.

The work in the winery starts with destemming; 60 percent of stems are left for all the wines, except the basic village Vosne-Romanée. The grape juice is punched down before the fermentation.

The wines are matured in 80 percent new wood during 15 months for village wines Vosne-Romanée and more than 15 months for grands crus.

Currently, the team pursues to stop racking and minimize the amount of sulfur used before bottling.
