About

Domaine Raveneau

Domaine Raveneau is a family estate located in Chablis, Burgundy. Current winemakers are Maxime Ravenau and Isabelle Ravenau, well-known for making powerful wines.

Top wines of Domaine Raveneau are: Chablis Grand Cru Clos, Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, and Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot. The Chablis Grand Cru Clos 2007 scored 97-98, the Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2017 scored 97, and the Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2014 scored 97 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chablis Grand Cru Clos 2007 are: “Raveneau’s 2007 Chablis Les Clos is less severe, intractably dense, or obdurately stony than most of the vintage’s representations of this great site, being at once electrically energized and practically ethereal in its high-toned expressions of bitter-sweet floral and pit fruit distillates, citrus zest, white truffle, quarry dust, and ocean breezes. Luscious grapefruit and white peach seem to be mingled with a sea water reduction on the palate, leading to a finish that tugs relentlessly at the salivary glands and practically seems to suck blood from your gums, all the while displaying buoyancy that defies gravity. This is magical. If lucky enough to acquire multiple bottles, I would plan to stretch out the experience of them over at least a dozen years”.

History

Since 2010 Domaine Raveneau has been managed by Bernard Ravenau’s daughter - Isabelle Ravenau. In 2017 Maxime Ravenau, the son of Jean-Marie Raveneau, also joined the family estate. The roots of the domaine go back to François** Raveneau, who was the first who started to bottle the wines. He retired in 1988.

Approach

The grapes are crushed before pressing. The juice is vinified in tanks, whereas the maturation is carried out in the barrels. In 1988 the Raveneau invested in a number of large barrels of 350 litres and above. New barrels now come mainly from Stéphane Chassin. In the past 132-litre feuillettes were used.

On Burgundy Report Isabelle Ravenau tells about vintage 2017: “ 2017 was frosted, but still different to the frost of 2016. In 2017 it was the bottom of the valleys that were effected – the normal Spring-frost style. In the right bank premiers, and Valmur too, we lost plenty to the frost – not so catastrophic as in 2016 though. Left bank was better, but the domaine as a whole still lost about 30% in total vs the half that was lost in 2016, but even in 2016 there were parcels that made their correct yield”.
