About

Domaine Louis Jadot

Domaine Louis Jadot is a 19th century estate located in Beaune, Burgundy. The winemaker is Frédéric Barnier, who makes fine wines, his winemaking style is with a less romantically philosophical discourse attached than his predecessors.

Top wines of Domaine Louis Jadot are: Musigny Grand Cru, Montrachet Grand Cru, and Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru.

Musigny Grand Cru 2012 scored 97-99, Montrachet Grand Cru 2010 scored 98, and Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2003 scored 98.

Robert Parker comments on Musigny Grand Cru 2012: “The 2012 Musigny Grand Cru is utterly beguiling on the nose: beautifully composed and refined with scents of blackberry and boysenberry fruit, forest floor and pressed flowers. The palate is supremely well balanced with perfect acidity slicing through the sophisticated dark berry fruit interlaced with spice and minerals. There is an effortless quality here that is totally captivating and it probably represents the apogee of Louis Jadot’s mammoth portfolio this year”.

History

1859

Today Domaine Louis Jadot is run by Pierre-Henri Gagey and the winemaker Frédéric Barnier.

Frédéric Barnier has been working for two years together with his predecessor - Jacques Lardière before he became the only winemaker of domaine Louis Jadot in 2011.

The roots of Domaine Louis Jadot go back to 1826, when the winemakers family acquired Clos des Ursules, but domaine of Louis Jadot was founded only in 1859.

In 2009 the winery was modernized and extended, and a new white-wine vinification center was completed.

On the vineyard front, there have been purchases of Domaine Prieur-Brunet in Santenay, following on from investments in domaine Ferret in Mâconnais and the Beaujolais, notably with the Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vent and Château de Bellevue in Morgon.

The domaine vineyards belong to various entities: Domaine Louis Jadot itself, Les Héritiers de Louis Jadot, Domaine Gagey, and Domaine Prieur-Brunet.

Approach

Frédéric Barnier prefers to do maceration after the fermentation is finished.

The wine thus stays in the vat until the cap, of skins and pips, starts to slide down of its own accord, which means that it is finished with the fermentation process.

The wine is then ageing in oak, typically with a third each of new oak, one-year-old and two-year-old barrels, across the cellar. Jadot has their own cooperage, the tonnellerie Cadus in Ladoix-Serrigny.
