About
Domaine Jean Grivot
Domaine Jean Grivot is amongst the prominent names in winemaking in Burgundy. The estate owns 12 hectares of vineyards located in communes such as Vosne-Romanée, Clos de Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Current owners of the domaine are Etienne Grivot and his daughter Mathilde.
The top wines of this domaine are Richebourg Grand Cru and Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts. The Richebourg Grand Cru 2012 scored 98, Richebourg Grand Cru 2005 scored 96-97 and Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016 scored 95-97 by the Wine Advocate.
The Richebourg Grand Cru 2012 was noted by Robert Parker: “Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine Jean Grivot has a slight reduction on the nose, but underneath there is plenty of intense black and red fruit, a touch of dried blood and black pudding. It does repay several minutes aeration, gaining more and more clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, moderate balance but it attenuates slightly towards the finish. There is a regal grand cru here but it is obdurate and backward - which is excusable for this vineyard. This is simply magnificent to its very core.”
The wines of the domaine are balanced, remarkable, mixing great affluence and density.
History
At present, Mathilde Grivot grows as a winemaker under the watchful eye of her father, Etienne’s Grivot. He succeeded Domaine Jean Grivot in the early 1980th.
In the 1990th Etienne Grivot adopted some principles of well-known enologist, Guy Accad. One of the main enologist’s contributions to the domaine was the implementation of cold pre-fermentation maceration.
The beginning of the domaine’s history goes back to the first half of the 20th century when Gaston Grivot built the estate. The domaine is named after his son - Jean Givot, who succeeded his father in 1955.
Approach
The grapes are totally destalked and lightly punched down. Fermentation starts naturally.
