Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques 2016: “The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques was just a single used barrel with 20 percent whole bunch. It has a beautiful, quixotic bouquet with ebullient red cherries, raspberry and mineral scents, becoming more and more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, supple tannin, pure shimmering red fruit and just thrilling tension on the finish. Dare I say it reminds me of Armand Rousseau? I was blown away by this Lavaux—a brilliant wine”.

History

Since 2013 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet has been run by the 7th generation winemaker - Amélie Berthaut. From 2015 the domaine has been producing wines under the Berthaut-Gerbet label.

Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet holdings are in Fixin, Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey Chambertin, and Flagey Echezeaux.

Amélie Berthaut has some sharecropping arrangements with Domaine de Chezeaux.

Nicolas Faure is Amélie Berthaut's husband, who is responsible for the vineyards. Nicolas Faure also produces wines under his own label.

The roots of Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet go back to the 18th century, to François Berthaut.

In 1930 Guy Berthaut took over from his parents. He extended the domaine’s holdings, buying the house on 18 Street Noisot, Fixin and renting new sharecropping plots in Gevrey-Chambertin.

Domaine’s credo is “Bien faire vaut mieux que dire” - that is written on the lintel of the door on 9 Street Noisot. It means that it is better to do well than just chatting.

In 2005 a new cellar for the grands crus wines was built.

Approach

Sustainable

Today Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet holdings are farmed according to the sustainable approach, but without being certified. The vineyards are regularly ploughed. Amélie Berthaut is the winemaker, she uses chemical treatments only against mildew and oidium. The juice is vinified in concrete tanks. The malolactic fermentation and maturation are carried out in barrels.

The quantity of new wood of barrels does not exceed 20 percent for village wines, and 50 - for premiers and grands crus wines.
