About
Domaine Derey
Domaine Derey is an old domaine whose history dates back to the 19th century. It is located in Couchey, near Marsannay-la-Côte and Fixin, Burgundy. The 20 hectares of the vineyards are currently managed by three brothers-vignerons Maxime Derey, Romain Derey, and Pierre-Marie Derey. They have farmed the vineyards according to an organic approach since 2020, but without being certified yet.
The Derey brothers’ wines are instinctive, frank and spontaneous, just like the brothers themselves. An immediate pleasure, where the fruit dominates without severity, does not prevent ageing potential.
The top wines of the domaine are Marsannay Aux Genelières, Marsannay Champs Perdrix, and Fixin Premier Cru Hervelets. On CellarTracker the Marsannay Aux Genelières 2016 scored 95, the Marsannay Champs Perdrix 2012 scored 93, and the Fixin Premier Cru Hervelets 2010 scored 91.
History
1950
Today the three brothers, Maxime Derey, Romain Derey, and Pierre-Marie Derey, control winemaking processes at Domaine Derey.
The Derey family have been vignerons since 1650. In the 19th century, Claude Derey settled in the village of Couchey. In the early 1950s, two brothers, Albert Derey and Maurice Derey founded the estate. They started bottling their vintages at the domaine. Albert Derey is a known person in Couchey due to his commitments: he was a mayor of Couchey for twelve years and a president of the local wine union for twenty-five years.
In the 2000s, the estate took on a decisive impetus with the transmission to the son Pierre Derey, later joined by his wife, Susanne. Today the domaine is managed by the next generation of vignerons, the three sons of Pierre Derey: Maxime Derey, Romain Derey, and Pierre-Marie Derey.
Maxime Derey joined the winemaking in 2010 and introduced an increasing degree of whole-bunch vinification.
Approach
Organic since 2020, Sustainable
Today, the three brothers-vignerons, Maxime Derey, Romain Derey, and Pierre-Marie Derey farm the 20 hectares of vineyards of Domaine Derey according to an organic approach since 2020. However, the domaine hasn’t been certified yet.
The Derey brothers practice careful vinification with slow maceration for the reds and moderate pressing for the whites. Since 2011, Maxime Derey has begun work on the taste and considerably varied the contribution of whole bunches: the cuvées range from 20 percent to 100 percent. These variations are often done based on rapid alcoholic fermentation, with or without the addition of sulphites, with indigenous yeasts. They prefer not to use any sulphur additions until after the malolactic fermentation.
The wine ages from 12 to 18 months with the use of 25 percent of new barrels and 40 percent for the most important cuvées: Marsannay Les Genelières, Fixin Les Clos and Fixin Premier Cru Les Hervelets. Bottling is always done according to the lunar cycle.
