About

Domaine Pierre Damoy

Domaine Pierre Damoy is an 11 hectares domaine located in Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy. Pierre Damoy, the winemaker, farms according to organic principles but is not certified yet.

Domaine Pierre Damoy's wine style is rich, layered and aromatic. Fat and grace. Benefitting from a high proportion of very old vines dating back to 1920.

The top wines of the domaine are: Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Chambertin Grand Cru, and Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru.

The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2014 scored 97, the Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 scored 95, and the Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 scored 93+ by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker's tasting notes on Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2014: "Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Damoy's 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was one of the highlights of the entire tasting. It has a showstopper of a nose with brilliantly defined black plum, cranberry, wild strawberry, sous bois and minerals. You just have to stop and admire the clarity of the aromatics here. The palate is extremely well balanced, with a fine bead of acidity interwoven through the black cherry, cranberry and raspberry fruit. There is the structure and masculinity of a Clos de Bèze, and yet it is certainly not unapproachable at this premature stage. Fabulous. You can feel the mouth still tingling long after the wine has departed. Quite brilliant."

History

The winemaker of Domaine Pierre Damoy is Pierre Damoy.

The estate was started by Pierre Damoy's great, great-grandfather, Julien Damoy. All the parcels remained with the family. With more than 5 hectares, Pierre Damoy is the largest holder of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru.

Jacques Damoy managed the domaine starting from 1971 to 1992. Pierre Damoy obtained a degree in agricultural research and, in 1992, took over from his uncle, Jacques Damoy.

In 1993 and 1999, Pierre Damoy made a separate cuvée from his old vines. He did the same in 1998, but the tiny amount has never been put on the market. In 2001 there was only one cuvée made, just from the old vines, and those who shipped early will have it with 'Vieilles Vignes' on the label, but it is not a separate bottling.

Domaine Pierre Damoy also owns a monopole, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot, where Pierre Damoy makes exceptionally fruity wines with the structure of a grand cru.

Approach

Organic without certification

Domaine Pierre Damoy vineyards are farmed according to an organic approach but aren't certified yet. The soils are ploughed, and neither herbicides nor pesticides are used in the vineyards. Pierre Damoy picks late. The result is high-octane wines, sometimes 15 percent alcohol.

While Pierre Damoy sells some grapes from Chambertin-Clos de Béze, since he has a large holding, and even a few from Chapelle-Chambertin, he buys in or makes a swap for some grapes from the lower appellations where he is short of supply like Bourgogne Rouge, Marsannay Longeroies and Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice.

Pierre Damoy uses a relatively high percentage of new wood: 30 percent for the Bourgogne, 50 percent for Gevrey-Chambertin, 80 percent for the crus and 100 percent for his Vieilles Vignes cuvée. Most of the barrels come from François Fréres, some from Berthomieu and Ermitage.
