About
Domaine Denis Bachelet
Domaine Denis Bachelet is a 4 hectares large domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy. The domaine is currently managed by winemaker Nicolas Bachelet, who follows a sustainable approach, but isn't certified yet.
The domaine wine style has evolved over the years: the wines were immensely supple in the 1980s and '90s, though capable of ageing very well, before becoming even denser and somewhat more tannic in the new century. Nicolas Bachelet's wines are considered one of the finest exponents of Gevrey-Chambertin. Their innate prettiness and purity cannot be left unattended.
The top wines of the domaine are: Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles, and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Corbeaux.
The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 scored 97 - 99, the Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 2016 scored 93 - 95, and the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Corbeaux 2014 scored 93 - 95.
Robert Parker's tasting notes on Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012: "The bad news is that this year there are only three barrels of the 2012 Charmes Chambertin Vielles Vignes instead of the usual eight, since the ancient vines were pole-axed by coulure during the season. Denis explained that the soils here are very shallow, 20cm until you hit the bedrock, and the grapes, what is left of them, tend to ripen easily. What makes it special is that Denis' parcel lies on the part of the vineyard next to Mazoyeres, whereby the limestone from the Combe d'Orveau eroded and tumbled into the climat. It has an exquisite bouquet with mineral-rich dark berry fruit, blackberry and raspberry leaf, and subtle dried violet petal scents, though not as pronounced as others from this vineyard. The palate is beautifully balanced, nonchalant and self-effacing. The black and red fruit are mingling together, and there is nigh perfect acidity on the finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is totally entrancing – but these days I expect nothing less from Denis Bachelet."
History
Nicolas Bachelet is the current winemaker at Domaine Denis Bachelet.
Denis Bachelet was born in 1963 in the town of Spy in Belgium. Denis Bachelet used to visit his grandparents in Gevrey during holidays and fell in love with the magic of the vigneron's world. Denis Bachelet started winemaking in 1981, shortly after his grandfather's death.
Nicolas Bachelet, the son of Denis Bachelet, is currently managing winemaking at the domaine and his second wife, Marie-Jo.
Approach
Sustainable
Domaine Denis Bachelet is farmed according to sustainable principles but is not certified yet.
Denis Bachelet has significantly improved the quality of the wood from Rousseau, Rémond and Chassin. The cellar has also been extended. This means that Denis Bachelet and Nicolas Bachelet can rack the wines later than they used to. Previously it was a rare cellar in which the first racking was carried out before the malolactic fermentation. The grapes are 100 percent destemmed and then crushed for colour extraction.
There is now a small bottling from the lieu-dit Evocelles, but the two key cuvées remain the exceptional Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes; some of the vines for this date back to 1920. There may still be a few vines at Charmes-Chambertin from the end of the 19th century. Otherwise, most of the Charmes plot was planted by Denis Bachelet's great-aunt in the 1920s, occasionally assisted by her younger sister, his grandmother.
