About
Domaine Lucien Boillot & Fils
Domaine Lucien Boillot & Fils is a 7 hectares large domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy. Since 2003 Pierre Boillot, the current winemaker, has been farming the vineyards according to a sustainable principle, but without certification yet. The domaine makes wine within 15 different appellations.
Pierre Boillot’s wines are generally impressive. The reds are the dominant wines, made at the domaine which are pure-fruited Pinots.
The top wines of the domaine are: Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Cherbaudes, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Pruliers, and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru La Perrière.
The Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Cherbaudes 2006 scored 93, the Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru Les Pruliers 2005 scored 92 - 94, and the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru La Perrière 2006 scored 92 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Cherbaudes 2006: “From ancient vines in a tiny, square cru bordering Mazis-Chambertin and the Les Gemeaux portion of Chapelle-Chambertin, and catty-corner to Clos de la Beze – and a site most of which Jean-Marie Fourrier owns – the Lucien Boillot 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes displays more than mere pretensions to grand cru quality. Rich in ripe plum and black cherry fruits, with overtones of rose petal and blond tobacco; savory and saline in its intersection of mineral and pan dripping-like and marrowy carnal elements; dynamically, interactively complex; and impeccably refined in tannins, this long-finishing beauty should be worth following for at least a decade.”
History
Pierre Boillot has been in charge of winemaking processes at Domaine Lucien Boillot & Fils since 2003.
Domaine Lucien Boillot & Fils was created in the 1950s by Henri Boillot, originally from Volnay, who was Pierre Boillot’s great-grandfather. Back in the 1950s, Henri Boillot shared the vineyards of Côte de Beaune domaine with his cousin, Jean-Marc Boillot and they continued winemaking separately.
Pierre Boillot inherited vines from his father in the Côtes de Nuits – and those from his great-grandfather Henri Boillot, in the Côte de Beaune.
Pierre Boillot worked together with his brother, Louis Boillot before they set up separate domaines in 2003.
Approach
Sustainable
Domaine Lucien Boillot & Fils is farmed according to a sustainable approach but isn’t certified as such yet.
The grapes are mostly fully destemmed, but in some cuvées there is a proportion of the whole bunches.
The wines are matured in François Fréres barrels. Pierre Boillot doesn’t use too much new wood. For village wines - 10 to 15 percent and 20 to 30 for the premiers crus. Pierre Boillot never bottles before the second spring, being not filtrated.
