Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze 2016: “The 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze was made from two cuvées, one destemmed and the other not, so that there is around 30 percent whole bunch. It has a very well-defined bouquet with outstanding tension and focus. The palate is pure and silky smooth, more red fruit than black, very harmonious with very well-integrated new oak - 80 percent. This is the best that the domaine has ever made. Period. Chapeau Nicolas and Caroline.”
History
1850
Winemaking in Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is managed by brother and sister Nicolas Drouhin and Caroline Drouhin. General management of the domaine is done by their parents Christine Drouhin and Philippe Drouhin, who are the sixth generation of the family running the domaine.
The domaine was founded in 1850 by Jean-Baptiste Laroze, who started a vineyard operation in Gevrey Chambertin. In 1919, Suzanne Laroze, granddaughter of Jean-Baptiste Laroze, married Alexandre Drouhin, who owned vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny and the estate was renamed Domaine Drouhin-Laroze.
Each generation invested in the development of the domaine to make it one of the best winemakers of the region. In 2008 at the initiative of Caroline Drouhin the négociant** Maison Drouhin-Laroze was created.
Approach
Sustainable without certification
The vineyards of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze are farmed according to the sustainable approach, though without the certification.
Harvesting is done manually in small crates. The grapes are systematically sorted before reaching the fermenting vats. Since 2015 the grapes have been pressed in whole bunches. For the village wines 30 percent of new woods is used, 60 percent for the premiers crus and 80 percent for the grands crus.
