Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 are: “The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru continues this cuvée's extraordinary run of success. Unwinding in the glass with rich aromas of plums and berries mingled with orange rind, black truffles, dark chocolate, violets and spices, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a deep and layered core, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is another monument in the making from Lalou Bize-Leroy”.

History

1986

Lalou Bize-Leroy is the fourth generation winemaker, who joined her father’s, Henri Leroy, business in 1955. Since 1971 Lalou Bize-Leroy has been a general manager of the estate, she has been succeeding in determining the essential characteristics of each terroir from each vineyard of Burgundy.

The roots of the domaine go back to François Leroy, who owned vines in Meursault, Pommard, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos Vougeot, and Richebourg, before he enlarged his business and founded Domaine Leroy in 1986. François Leroy was succeeded by his son Joseph Leroy, who, except for wines, was making liquors and distilled alcohols. In 1919, François Leroy's grandson joined the family business and created a subsidiary branch that produced eaux-de-vie alcohol in Gensac La Pallue, near Cognac.

During the international financial crises in the 1920s, Jacques Chambon, a friend of Henri Leroy, tended to sell his Domaine Romanée-Conti. Henri Leroy persuaded not to sell the estate and promised to make a diamond from the domaine. Jacques Chambon sold the stocks to Henri Leroy, which maked Henri Leroy half-owner of Domaine Romanée-Conti. Nowadays, the Leroy family still holds its shares. Henri Leroy gave the best of himself to this domaine - his intelligence, professionalism, heart, and soul.

Henri Leroy kept his promise and made Domaine Romanée-Conti what it is today.

Approach

Biodynamic, Certified organic by Ecocert

Lalou Bize-Leroy cultivates all the vineyards under biodynamic principles. The work in the vineyard is done manually. The harvest is picked by hand into the small buckets. Then the grapes are carefully sorted on two large sorting tables. To avoid any oxidation and to preserve the precious native yeasts which are present on the skins of the grapes, the fermentation is carried out in wooden barrels without destemming. Lalou Bize-Leroy prefers pushing down the cap, then - moving the fermenting juice from under the cap and bringing it on top of the cap.

For the aging Lalou Bize-Leroy chooses François Frères barrels. The wines are aged in two cellars. The first - is for the period until the end of the wine's malo-lactic fermentation. The second cellar is colder, for the period until bottling.
