Domaine Taupenot-Merme

About

Domaine Taupenot-Merme

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a 32 hectares large domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Côte-d'Or, Burgundy. The vineyards are farmed according to organic principles but aren't certified yet. Romain Taupenot and Virginie Toupenot are the current winemakers of the domaine.

Romain Taupenot and Virginie Toupenot's wines show their vineyard characters well, backed by

relatively firm structure.

The top wines of the domaine are: Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, Morey-Saint-Denis Grand Cru Clos des Lambray, and Corton Rognet Grand Cru.

The Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 scored 96, the Morey-Saint-Denis Grand Cru Clos des Lambray 2015 scored 93 - 95, and the Corton Rognet Grand Cru 2015 scored 93 - 95 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014: "Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru has a glorious bouquet with red and black fruit, sous bois and pressed rose petal aromas that seem to flourish in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red berry fruit laced with white pepper and orange peel. I appreciate the cohesion and length of this grand cru, one filled with panache to the last sip. This is a brilliant performance from Taupenot-Merme and it totally outclassed the Charmes-Chambertin tasted alongside."

History

1963

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is managed by two siblings, Romain Taupenot and Virginie Toupenot, the seventh generation of Côte de Nuits-based Taupenots.

In 1963 Denise Merme married Jean Taupenot, and it was the start of the current name of the domaine. Today, their grandchildren Virginie Taupenot and her brother Romain Taupenot are in charge of the company.

After her study, Virginie Taupenot came back to Burgundy. She joined the winemaking in 1994 and is a co-founder and the president of an association of women active in Burgundy - “Femmes&Vins de Bourgogne”.

Since his childhood, Romain Taupenot helped in the vineyards, assisting with harvest and selling his grandfather's wines. After obtaining a degree in business in Paris and building a career in the finance niche, he returned home. In 1998, he took over the management of the domaine, which he now runs alongside his sister, Virginie Taupenot.

Approach

Organic without certification since 2002

Domaine Taupenot-Merme farms its 32 hectares of vineyards according to organic approaches since 2002 but hasn't been certified yet.

Since he took over, Romain Taupenot has supervised constant enhancement and fine-tuning of wine quality. Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a rare domaine that produces both: Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyéres-Chambertin.

Romain Taupenot prioritizes work in the vineyard to minimize the cellar work. The grapes are sorted on a table de tri, being completely destemmed and given a cool soak at 10°C, then fermented for 7 to 9 days. Next, the grapes are maintained in the vat at 29°C for a few more days to manage the tannins. The wines then spend 12 to 14 months in barrel without racking until they are collected in a tank for bottling. Several coopers are used, with 30 percent new wood for the village wines, 40 percent for the premiers crus, and 50 percent for the grands crus.
