Domaine Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a family-owned 9 hectares large domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, which is in the Côte-d'Or, Burgundy. The father and son, Hubert Lignier and Laurent Lignier farm the vineyards according to certified organic approaches with a slight touch of biodynamics.
Hubert Lignier and Laurent Lignier’s wines bring pleasure and emotions but never taste alike. Wines which are enjoyable for tasting and drinking. Fresh, fine and elegant wines are also full-bodied with a long-lasting and mouth-watering finish.
The top wines of the domaine are: Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, and Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée MCMLV.
The Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2012 scored 99, the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 scored 97, and the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée MCMLV 2019 scored 95 - 97+ by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2012: “The 2012 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was riveting in barrel, so how would it perform in bottle? Instantly one can see that it is deeper in color than the Charmes-Chambertin (not that counts for much in Burgundy). The bouquet has closed a little since I last encountered this Grand Cru from barrel, but with patience it reveals gorgeous dark cherries, red plum, mineral and spice aromas, all gently unfurling. The palate is astonishingly fine. Here it fulfils its promise, a Grand Cru of intensity and finesse. It is blessed with a silky smooth texture but underneath that is exquisite balance and mineralité. It offers the sensuality of Clos de la Roche but with a rarefied level of refinement. You will be hard pressed to find a better Clos-de-la-Roche better than this.”
History
Hubert Lignier along with his son, Laurent Lignier, manage the winemaking at Domaine Hubert Lignier these days.
The history of the domaine started in the late 19th century when Jacques Lignier bought some parcels in Morey-Saint-Denis, which is in the northern part of Côte-d'Or, called Côte de Nuits.
The winemaking business passed from father to son throughout generations. The next winemaker was Jacques Lignier’s son Jules Lignier, than Henri Lignier and Hubert Lignier.
In the 1960s the estate was extended to 8 hectares.
Hubert Lignier’s son, Romain Lignier, joined the work at the estate in 1992 but passed away in 2004. His brother Laurent Lignier assists his father in commercial and technical aspects since 2006, and since 2011 on a full-time basis.
The new cellar has recently been built in Morey-Saint-Denis, where the estate has been since the very first vintage.
Approach
Biodynamic, Certified organic
The vineyards of Domaine Hubert Lignier are farmed according to certified organic approaches with some aspects of biodynamics.
The 9 hectares include Burgundian village, premier and grand cru appellations. In total, the 24 wines are made at the domaine.
There is nothing revolutionary about the applied processes and techniques. Some vines, including superb premier cru Vieilles Vignes, were planted between 1936 and 1952. The vineyards are ploughed since the 1990s, without the use of any weedkillers or insecticides. In 2011, the domaine moved to organic farming.
The wine ages in barrels with 20 to 30 percent of new oak. The ageing lasts between 20 to 22 months. In the cellar, Laurent Lignier used 15 to 20 percent whole bunches before 2018, after 2018 the proportion has changed. The wines are not fined, therefore have great ageing potential.
