About
Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot
Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot is located in Morey-Saint-Denis, Burgundy. The 12 hectares of vineyards are farmed according to non-certified organic principles by Virgile Lignier, who is the winemaker at the domaine today.
Virgile Lignier's wines are delicate and elegant. They are relatively deep in colour, with a sensuality that just when you think it is getting too plush, it is reined in by a precisely-defined structure. On tasting, the wines are supple and deep. Over time, the tannins soften to reveal the elegance and aromatic palette of Pinot Noir.
The top wines of the domaine are Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, and Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
The Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2016 scored 95 - 97, the Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2016 scored 94 - 96, and the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 scored 93 - 95 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker's tasting notes on Morey-Saint-Denis Grand Cru Clos de la Roche 2016: "The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru includes 70 percent whole-bunch fruit with 30 percent new oak. It has a very exuberant, typical bouquet for this vineyard that goes out of its way to please: copious black cherries, griottes and crushed violet aromas all demanding attention. The palate is sweet and supple on the entry with saturated tannin counterbalanced by a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and linear at first, then fanning out on the second half with lightly peppered black fruit. There is a very long aftertaste here and you can sense the presence of this wine 45 to 60 seconds after it has departed."
History
Virgile Lignier is the current winemaker in charge at Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot.
The domaine was founded by Virgile Lignier's grandfather, Maurice Lignier, along with his brothers, Georges Lignier and Henri Lignier. Maurice père was joined by Maurice fils in 1960, the latter planting 1.8 hectares of En La Rue de Vergy in 1974.
Virgile Lignier started working at Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot in 1988. The first bottling took place in 1989. When bulk prices collapsed in 1990, he increased the amounts of bottled wines and started exporting.
Virgile Lignier took over the vineyards of his father in 1999, and in 2000 he started a mini-négociant alongside to buy his aunt's share of the crop.
The Michelot suffix in the domaine's name refers to the Virgile Lignier's mother, a native of the Haute-Marne and not related to Burgundians of the same name.
Approach
Organic without certification
Virgile Lignier farms the vineyards of Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot according to non-certified organic principles. The vineyards extend over 12 hectares and are split into around sixty plots in some of the best climates of the Côte de Nuits, in the villages of Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Fixin, Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Virgile Lignier works in the vineyards with the greatest care in cultivating the soils concerning the biodiversity and the great terroirs of Burgundy. He minimises the interventions in the cellar to ensure the purity of his wines.
All the cuvées are vinified with a large proportion of unstemmed grapes. The entire range of wines, produced by Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot, is aged for 12 months in oak barrels and four months in stainless steel vats. Then, each cuvée is blended in stainless steel vats for four months.
The proportion of new wood does not exceed 30 percent, and considerable attention is paid to the choice of coopers and the drying of this wood.
