About

Domaine Michel Magnien

Domaine Michel Magnien is a family-owned 18 hectares large domaine, located in the northern part of Côte-d'Or, called Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. The vineyards are farmed by Frédéric Magnien since 1993, and were certified biodynamic by Demeter in 2015.

Frédéric Magnie's wines are elegant, well-balanced and of deep colour.

The top wines of the domaine are: Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, and Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.

The Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2003 scored 96, the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2003 scored 96, and the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 scored 93 - 95 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Morey-Saint-Denis Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis 2003: "A stunner, the sexy, medium to full-bodied 2003 Clos Saint-Denis explodes from the glass with aromas of waxy black cherries. Armed with huge amplitude, this is a sensual wine packed with black cherries, blackberries, and stony black fruits. Powerful yet suave, it also displays a wonderfully long, fruit-filled finish…I re-tasted it from the same bottle 6 days later and, while its fruit had begun drying out, this wine showed no signs of oxidation."

History

The current winemaker in charge at Domaine Michel Magnien is Frédéric Magnien, the fifth generation vigneron. Frédéric Magnien also releases wines under his own label.

In 1946, Michel Magnien, the fourth generation of winegrowers of the Magnien family, took over 4 hectares of his father’s, Bernard Magnien’s, vineyards.

Between 1967 and 1991, Michel Magnien and his wife Dominique Magnien significantly extended their vineyards by purchasing some parcels. In 1988, Michel Magnien took over his father's vines from a vineyard rental system and kept going to deliver the harvest of Bernard Magnien to the cooperative of Morey-Saint-Denis.

Frédéric Magnien, Michel Magnien's son, joined the family estate in 1993 and inspired his father to put all their harvests in bottles instead of selling them to cooperatives.

In 1998, Domaine Michel Magnien created a label representing the first letters of the three partners in this Domaine: Dominique, Michel and Frédéric.

Since 2008, the Domaine has moved to organic viticulture, and was certified in biodynamics by Demeter in 2015.

Approach

Certified biodynamic by Demeter since 2015

The vineyards of Domaine Michel Magnien are farmed according to biodynamic principles. The vineyards were certified by Demeter in 2015.

Frédéric Magnien was using up to 2009 30 to 50 percent of new barrels made by François Frères.

When the conversion to biodynamic farming started in 2010, Frédéric Magnien reduced the new wood component to 10 percent. In time he decided to remove the new wood. He replaced some wood with terracotta in two formats. The larger amphorae have been baked at 1,200°C, making them relatively airtight, like older barrels. The smaller jars have been baked at a lower temperature and let in greater airflow - as do new barrels.

This technique is used for all wines. The variation between wood and terracotta varies according to the origin of the grapes, but very broadly, those from Chambolle-Musigny are likely to be raised two-thirds in clay and one-third in wood; Gevrey-Chambertin the other way round; Morey-Saint-Denis half and half. After one year, the wines are racked into the tank so the amphorae can be used for the next vintage.

Combined with the traditional ageing in wooden barrels, this gives the best expression of the terroir. The terracotta jars don't require sulfur during vinification. Only before bottling a little sulphite is added to the wines.
