About
Domaine Stéphane Magnien
Domaine Stéphane Magnien, a 4.5 hectares estate, is right behind the church in Morey-Saint-Denis, which is in Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Stéphane Magnien farms the vineyards according to sustainable principles, certified by HVE.
Stéphane Magnien is a good source for Morey-Saint-Denis Premiers Crus Faconnières. Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes is also well worth looking out for, the vines were planted in 1902. Stéphane Magnien wines are impressively concentrated, especially the Clos Saint-Denis.
The top wines of the domaine are: Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Sentier, and Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
The Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2015 scored 96, the Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Sentier 2013 scored 91, and the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 scored 87 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker's tasting notes on Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2015: "Tasted blind, Magnien's 2015 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru showed very well indeed, unfurling in the glass with a rich, spicy bouquet of cherries, incense, citrus rind, rich soil and dried flowers, framed by some savory notes of grilled meat and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and lavish, with velvety structuring tannins, a deep core of fruit and juicy balancing acids, concluding with a long and sapid finish. This performed superbly against its peers in this tasting and is well worth seeking out."
History
1897
Stéphane Magnien is the fourth-generation vigneron at Domaine Stéphane Magnien since 2008.
The history of domaine goes back to 1897. However, the buildings and cellars were built long before that time.
The previous vigneron of the domaine, Jean-Paul Magnien, developed domaine-bottling. His son, Stéphane Magnien, joined in 2002. Stéphane Magnien took over the domaine in 2008. Following the family tradition, the domaine's name was changed from "Domaine Jean-Paul Magnien" to "Domaine Stéphane Magnien".
Stéphane Magnien has refined the quality of the wines. He is a rising star of the Côte de Nuits.
Approach
Certified sustainable by HVE
The 4.5 hectares of vineyards at Domaine Stéphane Magnien are farmed according to HVE-certified sustainable approaches. Herbicides have never been used.
The grapes are usually destemmed, then vinified with some punching down at first and pumping over after that.
Stéphane Magnien uses Berthomieu, Billon, and 36-month air-dried Tonnellerie de Mercurey barrels. Billon barrels are used for Chambolle-Musigny, Tonnellerie de Mercurey barrels for the grands crus. He uses 15 percent of new oak for village wines, 25 percent for premiers crus and 35 percent for grands crus.
There are two bottlings of Morey-Saint-Denis Village: Grains Fins comes from younger vines on predominantly limestone soil, while the Vieilles Vignes vineyards are on deeper clay soil, giving a weightier but sometimes reductive wine of less refinement.
Stéphane Magnien neither clarifies nor filtered his wines before bottling.
