About
Domaine Gérard Raphet
The 12 hectares of Domaine Gérard Raphet's vineyards are located in Morey-Saint-Denis, Burgundy. The current winemaker, Marion Raphet, follows sustainable approaches in farming.
Marion Raphet's wines are of delicate ruby colour, with pleasing aromas and flavours. They are surprising with their forceful intensity, often limited and highly sought-after wines. Marion Raphet puts precision over and above power and concentration.
The top wines of the domaine are: Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, and Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvée Unique.
The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2003 scored 98, the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2003 scored 97, and the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvée Unique 2003 scored 96 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2003: “Fashioned from 100-year old vines and aged entirely in new oak, the stupendous 2003 Chambertin-Clos de Beze has extraordinary aromatic depth. Its licorice and dark cherry scents lead to a medium to full-bodied personality that seamlessly combines massive power with graceful elegance. Pure, fleshy, and profound, it is packed with chocolate drenched in red and black cherries. Drink this regal wine between 2008 and 2020+.”
History
Marion Raphet, the fourth generation vigneron, is the current winemaker at domaine Domaine Gérard Raphet.
Gérard Raphet, Marion Raphet's father, took charge in succession to his father Jean Raphet in 2002. Today, Marion Raphet works alongside her father, bringing to life the best winemaking practices, carefully passed from generation to generation.
Approach
Sustainanble
Domaine Gérard Raphet vineyards are farmed according to a sustainable approach but are not certified yet.
The grape yields are strictly controlled, and all the harvesting is done by hand. The manual work still dominates at the domaine as Marion Raphet keeps following winemaking approaches developed by the family throughout the years.
The grapes are fully destemmed since the domaine makes wines that age well. The grapes are fermented on indigenous yeasts in tanks and then are matured for some 18 months in mostly older French oak barrels.
There are two cuvées made of Clos de Vougeot, the Vielles Vignes coming from vines between 100 and 120 years old. Marion Raphet uses just 15 percent of new wood to get the most of the terroir.
Not all of the domaine's wines are bottled at the estate by themselves, a proportion of the grapes are sold in bulk. The wines are neither filtered nor fined.
