Domaine d'Ardhuy

About

Domaine d'Ardhuy

Domaine d'Ardhuy is located in Clos des Langres, which looks down on the main road just as you enter the Côte de Nuits from the south. This potentially impressive domaine in Burgundy makes just over forty different wines from 38.5 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are farmed by winemaker Vincent Bottreau, according to biodynamic principles. The domaine has been certified biodynamic since 2012.

Vincent Bottreau makes excellent wines from beautiful grapes which reflect the terroir they come from. His reds are fine-boned, attractive wines that age well.

The top wines of the domaine are: Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Petit Maupertui, and Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru.

On Jasper Morris, the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 scored 93, the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Petit Maupertui 2018 scored 91 - 95, and the Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2018 scored 90 - 93.

Jasper Morris’s tasting notes on the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018:

Vincent Bottreau took over as general manager and winemaker at Domaine d’Ardhuy in 2017 and evidently wanted to show a wine made on his watch, hence the young vintage. Mid purple, lively fresh fruit, the raspberry is leading over the oak, though that is certainly present. More raspberry with a little cream, this is not a large scale Clos de Vougeot, but with some elegance. Raspberry is the main fruit with some strawberry too. Balanced, not too hot, and with excellent persistence. 1 percent alcohol.

History

Vincent Bottreau is the vigneron in charge at Domaine d'Ardhuy.

Domaine d’Ardhuy is owned by Mireille d’Ardhuy-Santiard and her six sisters, the granddaughter of Pierre André of Chateau de Corton-André - which the family sold in 2003 along with the négociant business La Reine Pédauque.

The domaine was founded in the middle of the 20th Century when Gabriel d'Ardhuy and Éliane André married. Together they have found Domaine d'Ardhuy.

Gabriel d'Ardhuy was lucky to extend the vineyards of the domaine with plots in Puligny-Montrachet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot or even Corton-Charlemagne.

From 2003 to 2016 Domaine d’Ardhuy, hired Carel Voorhuis as general manager. He moved the domaine to biodynamic in 2009, with certification three years later.

The ancestral home is built over vaulted cellars dating from the 17th Century, and it contains an 18th Century "Parrot" wine press listed in the National Heritage of Historical Monuments.

Approach

Certified biodynamic since 2012

Vincent Bottreau has been farming the vineyards at Domaine d'Ardhuy since 2017, following biodynamic approaches. The domaine was certified biodynamic in 2012.

The vineyards are ploughed and manually harvested. The current management, under Vincent Bottreau, temporarily suspended the organic and biodynamic approach though they hope to resume when more investment for some necessary infrastructure becomes available. A significant replanting programme has been set in train under the new chef de culture, Christophe François.

The domaine makes both: white and red wines. The whites are mostly fermented in a separate location in Ladoix. They like a significant settling of the juice before fermentation, with very little lees-stirring. The reds have varying amounts of whole-bunch vinification, depending on vintage and vineyard.
