Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg gained steam making more and more sought-after wines. The holdings of the domaine comprise 8.8 hectares of vineyards and the cellar in Vosne-Romanée. Viticulture is treated according to sustainable principles. The current owners are Marie-Christine Mugneret and Marie-Andrée Mugneret, daughters of Georges Mugneret.
The top wines of the domaine are Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Chaignots, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Vignes Rondes and Nuits-Saint-Georges Village. The Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Chaignots 2019 scored 94, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Vignes Rondes 2003 scored 93, Nuits-Saint-Georges Village 2017 scored 91 by the Wine Advocate.
The Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Chaignots 2019 was described by Robert Parker: “Deeper pitched than the Vosne-Romanée La Colombière, the 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots unwinds in the glass with scents of cassis, plums and raspberries mingled with top notes of rose petals, espresso roast and rich spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with an ample core of fruit and ripe, powdery tannins. It's an especially charming rendition of this immensely consistent cuvée.”
The wines of the domaine are soft, delicate, refreshing and delightful.
History
1933
The domaine is currently run by two sisters: Marie-Christine Mugneret - who is responsible for the vinification process, and Marie-Andrée Mugneret - who is responsible for the vineyards. They succeeded their parents, Georges and Jacqueline Mugneret.
In 1933, the domaine was founded by the spouse of André Mugneret and Jeanne Gibourg under the name Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg. Their son, Georges Mugneret, continued to take care of the family business till 1988. During his management the holdings of the domaine were expanded by purchasing a few parcels of vineyards - Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Vignes Rondes and Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Feusselottes; Georges Mugneret decided to unite these parcels under another domaine name - Domaine Georges Mugneret. In 1988, Georges Mugneret passed away and his wife Jacqueline Mugneret became in charge of the domaine along with her daughters. Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg and Domaine Georges Mugneret unified to Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg in 2009; in the same year Jacqueline Mugneret retired.
Approach
Sustainable
The vineyards of Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg are handled according to sustainable principles. Every year - during the period of dormancy, the soil is ploughed and the vines are pruned. Harvesting is done manually. As grapes arrive in the winery, they are meticulously sorted, destemmed and transferred to the vats. The next steps are - cold maceration for 4-5 days and fermentation for about 10 days. After devatting and pneumatic pressing, the juice is transferred to the barrels for 18 months of ageing; this period is combined with racking. The percentage of new oak usage - 30 percent for village wines, 40-45 percent for the premiers crus and around 70 percent for the grands crus. The wines are bottled without any fining or filtration.
