The essential characteristic of the Schumacher wines is their profound elegance, even if this is not immediately recognizable in every vintage.

Gerhard Eichelmann notes, "[...] Our favourite also comes from the Rosenthal: The Magna Essentia is beautifully pure and concentrated, powerful and gripping, still youthful."
History
Paul Schumacher is the owner and winemaker of Weingut Paul Schumacher.
Initially, he produced wine for others, bottling some for himself as a side hobby. When he moved into the buildings of the former Marienthal Wine Cooperation, he concentrated on his own wine production. In 2021 the winery was heavily damaged by the floods and he processed his grapes at Weingut Bertram-Baltes. His own winery is still under reconstruction, but he is already able to make his beloved wine there again.
Approach
The vineyards of Weingut Paul Schumacher are mostly located in Walporzheim, Marienthal, and Ahrweiler.
Paul Schumacher also holds parcels in the Mittelrhein, where he grows Riesling on half a hectare in Leutesdorf.
Spätburgunder is the major grape variety, which takes up 70 percent of the vineyard area. There are also smaller amounts of Frühburgunder and Riesling and a little Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Two-thirds of the vines are over 40 years old. The oldest grapevines are 75 years old. Due to increasing demand, he has also been buying grapes from other winegrowers since 2005.
In the cellar, he works with open mash fermentation, lasting between 8 and 14 days. Sometimes the grapes are cold macerated for up to five days to extract extra colour and flavour from the grapes. All his wines are fermented spontaneously and aged in wooden barrels. Some of the wines are bottled without filtration.
