About

Domaine Michel Noëllat & Fils

Domaine Michel Noëllat & Fils is a constantly evolving domaine, located in Vosne-Romanée. The estate owns more than 20 hectares of vineyards. The principles of vineyards treatment are close to sustainable. The current owners of the domaine are cousins - Sébastian Noëllat, Jean-Marc’s Noëllat son, and Sophie Noëllat, Alain’s Noëllat daughter.

The top wines of the domaine are Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru and Vosne-Romanée Echézeaux du Dessus Grand Cru. The Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts 2015 scored 92-94, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 and Vosne-Romanée Echézeaux du Dessus Grand Cru 2015 scored 91-93 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker noted the Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts 2015: “The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts has a refined bouquet with plenty of what we call "Pinoté" - quite Lamarche-like in style. There is a touch of reduction though, that will ebb away with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit, a keen line of acidity and better precision and nervosité than the Les Suchots. There is drive and focus to this premier cru, as well as excellent length. This is well worth investigating.”

The wines of the domaine are pretty fruity, vivid, adorable and brilliant.

History

At present, Domaine Michel Noëllat & Fils is managed by Sébastian Noëllat and Sophie Noëllat. Sébastian Noëllat is responsible for the vineyards and winery, while Sophie Noëllat is responsible for the commercial part. They succeeded their parents Jean-Marc Noëllat and Alain Noëllat in 2019.

The history of the domaine goes back to the early 20th century and begins with Ernest Noëllat - the brother of Charles Noëllat, who ran erstwhile notable Domaine Charles Noëllat. Ernest Noëllat was succeeded by his son - Henri Noëllat, who married Marie-Thérèse Jayer, daughter of Henri Jayer’s uncle Edouard Jayer. Their son, Michel Noëllat married Hélène Noëllat - his distant cousin. Their children, Jean-Marc Noëllat and Alain Noëllat took over the reins of the domaine in 1989.

Approach

Sustainable

The vineyards' treatment of Domaine Michel Noëllat is close to sustainable principles. Sébastian and Sophie Noëllat prefer ploughing to herbicides usage.

After manual harvesting, the grapes are sorted and transferred to the winery; in order to avoid crushing and oxidation, small baskets are used. The grapes are totally destemmed and given a cool pre-maceration for three days; some punching down and pumping over is applied. Fermentation lasts for two weeks. After 15-18 months of barrel maturation, the wine is bottled. The percentage of new oak usage is 60 percent for the grands crus and 30 percent for the village wines.
