Domaine Paul Pernot

About

Domaine Paul Pernot

Domaine Paul Pernot is located in Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy. The estate holds 23 hectares of vineyards 75 percent of which are centred in Puligny-Montrachet. The holdings of the domaine include such premiers crus as Les Folatières, Les Pucelles, Clos de la Garenne and Champ Canet and two grands crus – Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. The viticulture is non-certified sustainable.

The current vigneron in charge is Paul Pernot. His wines are of impressive persistence, refreshment and energy, with a silky texture, sense of juiciness and transparency.

The top wines of the domaine are Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Pucelles. The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2007 scored 95, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2007 scored 94, and the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Pucelles 2007 scored 94 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2007: “The Pernot 2007 Batard-Montrachet features very ripe peach and melon; honeysuckle; Chartreuse-like distilled herbal essences; and marzipan, in a sweetly aromatic display that presages a lush, oily-rich palate of almost gaudy complexity. This finishes with huge chalk-, herb-, and a floral-tinged wave of fruit and nut essences. Two of Pernot’s three parcels of Batard are in Chassagne, and there seldom seems to be any risk of mistaking the differences with his Bienvenues, but in this vintage, what could on other occasions become an overbearing and less elegant personality in Batard retains lift and a modicum of refreshment to go with its abundant ripeness and sheer force.”

History

1959

From 1959 onwards, Domaine Paul Pernot is managed by Paul Pernot. He is assisted by his two sons, Michel Pernot and Paul Pernot.

The roots of the domaine go back to Paul Pernot's great-grandfather, a négociant from Puligny.

The domaine was founded in 1959 from 10 hectares of vines by Paul Pernot. Though by now, Domaine Paul Pernot is one of the largest shareowners in the Puligny-Montrachet appellation.

Eighty percent of domaine’s wine production goes to Maison Joseph Drouhin, a long-term partner of Domaine Paul Pernot. Besides, a certain amount of grapes not required for bottling under the Domaine Paul Pernot label go to Domaine Pernot-Belicard and Domaine Alvina Pernot, owned by Paul Pernot's grandchildren, Philippe Pernot and Alvina Pernot.

Approach

Sustainable

The viticulture of Domaine Paul Pernot is non-certified sustainable.

The soils are mainly ploughed but not across all the vineyards.

In the winery, the grapes are crushed, slightly pressed, settled, and fermented in barrels with the help of cultured yeasts. Maturation lasts 11 months, with 30 percent of new wood for the grands crus, 20 to 25 percent for the premiers crus and 10 percent for the village wines.

Before bottling, racking is carried out.
