Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Montrachet Grand Cru 1996 are: “This estate's 1996 Montrachet is an extraordinary wine. Complex aromas of minerals, stones, flowers, and sweet toast are followed by a massively powerful and refined personality. Mouth-coating and intense, with saturating waves of roasted peaches, anise, liquid minerals and rocks, this is an oily-textured, broad, and elegant blockbuster of a wine! Gorgeously-balanced and focused, it should age admirably well. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015+.”.

History

1920

Nowadays Domaine Guy Amiot & Fils is managed by the 5th generation of winemakers - Thierry Amiot and his brother Fabrice Amiot. They took over the domaine from their father - Guy Amiot in 1993. Thierry Amiot is responsible for the vines and winemaking while Fabrice develops the business in France and oversees.

Thierry Amiot’s daughter, Héloise, born in 1995, studied viticulture at the Beaune high school, worked in a winery in Australia, and continued her training in oenology at the University of Dijon. At present she works part-time at Domaine Guy Amiot & Fils with her father, and at Domaine Bernard-Bonin in Meursault with her mother.

The roots of the domaine go back to 1920. The business started with the purchase of the plots of Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets, Les Vergers, Clos Saint-Jean, and Dents de Chien, which would become Le Montrachet grand cru in 1937.

In the 1930s the domaine bottling was launched. Pierre Amiot succeeded his parents, who were founders of the estate, in 1935. He managed to open a wine store in Paris and sold bottles of Domaine Arsène Amiot till 1941.

The label of the estate is inspired by the Art-Nouveau style that marked the beginnings of Domaine Amiot.

In 1985 Guy Amiot, the son of Pierre Amiot, oenologist, and experienced winemaker gave a new impetus to the estate. He was producing new styles, remarkable vintages, and developing international trade. It is Guy Amiot who made Domaine Guy Amiot & Fils notoriety throughout the world.

Approach

Red wines are produced from completely destemmed grapes.

At Domaine Guy Amiot & Fils the vinification methods remain traditional, in oak barrels. The maturation period in barrels and vats for the cuvées to develop the aromatic structure was extended up to 20 months for the whites and 24 months for the reds.
