Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

About

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric** Mugnier is an early 18-th century estate in Chambolle-Musigny. In 1984 Frédéric Mugnier, inherited the 4 hectares domaine. Nowadays, the vineyard is mostly fully mature, and the wines true to their appellations and with wonderful finesse and harmony.

Top wines of this domaine are Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. The Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru 2015 scored 100, Musigny Grand Cru 2019 scored 98-100 and Musigny Grand Cru 2020 scored 97-99 by The Wine Advocate. Robert Parker notes, that Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru 2015 confirmed the brilliance it displayed when he tasted it earlier that year, unfurling in the glass with a captivating bouquet of cherries, raspberries, rose petal and orange rind, complemented by savory nuances of espresso, game bird and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and extraordinarily complete, with a lavish attack, a deep, perfectly balanced core and a long, fragrant finish. Concentrated but weightless, this is an utterly profound rendition of what some would argue is Burgundy's greatest vineyard.

History

1863

The current winemaker is Frédéric Mugnier, who is a member of the fifth generation of the family, of the Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, that goes back to 1863.

Frédéric Mugnier took over the family estate in 1984 and was combining the vineyard work with his job as an airline pilot. In 1998 he completely focused on the development of the domaine and got excellent results.

Besides Chambolle-Musigny, Frédéric Mugnier has three more holdings: Les Amoureuses, Bonnes Mares, and Clos de la Maréchale. From 1950 to 1977 the vineyards in Chambolle were leased out to Faively and during 1950-1984 to Bruno Clair. After this period of time the lands returned to Mugnier family usage.

In 2004 Frédéric Mugnier made the first releases from the 10 hectares Clos de la Maréchale monopole that had been previously rented by Faiveley. One of the decisions of Frédéric Mugnier was to vinify fruit from young vines separately, which contributed to the making of new wine - Clos des Fourches.

Approach

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric** Mugnier is farmed without herbicides and pesticides but it has applied non-organic treatment against mildew. The grapes are sorted manually. Since 2002, there has been a vibrating table, which sorts grapes with extraneous objects, and removes stalks. After that berries are put into the vats and given two or three days of maceration at 15 °C. Fermentation starts naturally by the practice of adding small amounts of sugar and it lasts 18 days. The wines are matured in barrels with little new wood. The bottling process is done without fining or filtration.
