Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Maltroye 2014 are: “Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Maltroye from Heitz-Lochardet took time to really evolve in the glass, although eventually it offers very nuanced scents of yellow flowers, Japanese yuzu and slate-like aromas, all with very fine delineation. The palate is well balanced with fresh acidity, crisp and focused with a palpable sense of energy and tension on the finish. This has good potential.”.

History

1983

In 2011 Armand Heitz graduated from oenology school at the Changins engineering school in Switzerland, and then took over the reins of the domaine. In 2018 Armand Heitz asked his brother-in-law Augustin Ceyrac to join the domaine. Augustin Ceyrac applies his huge experience acquired in Africa, Asia, New Zealand, the United States at domaine’s work.

Nowadays the wines of the domaine are still produced under the Domaine Heitz-Lochardet label.

In 2021 Armand Heitz continued his search for autonomy and circularity by embarking on cattle breeding. The contributions of cattle breeding are very interesting in polyculture to nourish the soil and strengthen biodiversity.

The roots of the domaine go back to 1857 to the Nié-Vantey family. The family then owned vines from Santenay to Clos de Vougeot and had a significant trading activity. In 1983 Brigitte Lochardet married Christian Heitz and created the Heitz-Lochardet estate.

Armand Heitz produces Coteaux Bourguignons, Coteau de l’Auxois Vin de France under the label Armand Heitz.

Approach

The main purpose in the vineyard is to bring life to the soils. Sowing, grassing, compost and mulch are thus put in place to meet the specific needs of each plot. Pruning and disbudding are carried out in order to respect the flow of sap. This meticulous work allows to reduce the impact of wood diseases and increase the lifespan of the plots.

The fermentation is usually done from whole-bunched pressed grapes. The fermentation is carried out in tanks, whereas maturation - in barrels. Armand Heitz, the winemaker, prefers to age wines in low-toasted barrels from Vicard and Chassin. The quantity of new wood does not exceed 30 percent. Since 2016 the closure has been under DIAM.

Armand Heitz’s winemaking style aims to be the least interventionist. The quality of the grapes must therefore be irreproachable in order to highlight each climate and each vintage.

All vintages are different and require a significant adaptation of the practices.
