About

Domaine Thomas Morey

Domaine Thomas Morey is a 9 hectares large domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy. Thomas Morey is the winemaker. The vineyards of Domaine Thomas Morey are farmed according to non-certified sustainable principles.

Thomas Morey crafts elegant, lively, mineral, rich, silky and appealing wines. There is an excellent range of premiers crus to choose from — but do not ignore the straight Chassagne-Montrachet, which comes from six plots in the northern sector of the village. Among the crus, if you cannot find the subtle, almost ethereal Batard-Montrachet or the rare and beautifully crafted Dent de Chien and Vide-Bourse, look out for Les Baudines, which is very representative of Thomas Morey’s fine-boned style.

The top wines of the domaine are: Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru La Truffière, and Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Dent de Chien.

The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2010 scored 95+, the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru La Truffière 2010 scored 94, and the Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Dent de Chien 2010 scored 92 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2010: “Understated richness and power come through in the 2010 Batard-Montrachet. Layers of expressive perfumed fruit emerge from the glass as the 2010 shows off its considerable complexity and class. There is an inner sweetness in the 2010 that is fabulous. Overall, this is a pretty, refined style of Batard that at times recalls Chevalier. Intense mineral notes come to life on the vibrant finish. The Batard is gorgeous, but it is also very, very young. This is a great showing from Thomas Morey. Morey crafts his Batard from two parcels on the Chassagne side. Anticipated maturity: 2014+.”

History

2006

Thomas Morey is the tenth-generation vigneron in charge at Domaine Thomas Morey.

The Moreys have been a family of vignerons in Chassagne-Montrachet since the 17th century. Claude Morey, a native of Paris-l'Hôpital, arrived in Chassagne-Montrachet in 1643. His descendants worked either in the vineyards or as coopers. By the end of the 19th-century winegrowing became their primary activity. Since then, each generation inherited or purchased plots of vineyards and passed them on to their children.

Thomas Morey learned a lot from his grandfather and father, having worked with them at the domaine for 12 years. In 2006 he decided to establish his domaine with his wife, Sylvie. The first vintage under his label was made the following year, in 2007.

Today, the domaine has improved a lot from what it was in the days of Thomas Morey's grandparents. The vines of the domaine are covering six communes: Maranges, Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, and Beaune.

Approach

Sustainable

Domaine Thomas Morey's 9 hectares of vineyards are farmed according to a non-certified sustainable principle.

Thomas Morey bottles before the following harvest, the cellar is warmed to start the malolactic fermentation, which in 2010 was done by January, to give the wines six months or so to settle before bottling.

Thomas Morey uses a maximum of 15 percent of new wood for any wine and none on the very small cuvées.
