About

Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey

Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey is located in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy. The 20 hectares of vineyards are farmed according to a non-certified sustainable approach by the current winemaker, Vincent Morey.

Vincent Morey and his wife, Sophie strive to make round, rich white wines, with clear butter tones, coupled with good freshness and storage capacity.

The top wines of the domaine are: Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets, Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Embazées, and Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru.

The Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets 2009 scored 93+, the Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Embazées 2014 scored 93, and the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2010 scored 93 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets 2009: “The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets emerges from the glass with layers of expressive fruit. The Caillerets is wonderfully voluminous, with gorgeous textural richness and fabulous overall balance. It is one of the more extroverted wines here, but all of elements are beautifully integrated. Crushed rocks and slate frame the tropical, mineral-drenched finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013+.“

History

2007

Vincent Morey, the tenth generation vigneron, is the winemaker at Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey these days.

The Moreys have been living in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643.

After graduation from Lycée Viticole in Beaune and an internship in Saint-Emilion in the Bordeaux region, Vincent Morey joined his father Bernard Morey in 1986. In the same year, Sophie, Vincent Morey’s wife was vinifying her first vintage at Domaine Ménager-Belland in Santenay, taking over the winemaking from her mother.

Bernard Morey divided his vineyards between his sons Vincent Morey and Thomas Morey in 2006. The same year Sophie and Vincent Morey founded their own domaine and had their first harvest in 2007.

Approach

Sustainable

The vineyards at Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey are farmed according to non-certified sustainable principles.

Vincent Morey and his wife, Sophie, agree that fine wines start with good grapes and require attention to detail. The vineyards consist of 12 hectares of Pinot Noir and 8 hectares of Chardonnay in the villages of Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin and Puligny-Montrachet. The soil in this area usually contains a lot of clay, limestone, and here and there some pebbles.

For red, only fully ripe grapes are harvested. Fruit, finesse and a minimum of bitters ensure that the red wines can be drunk at a young age. Some grapes grown at the domaine are still sold off in bulk, especially from their bigger holdings such as Embazées.

Vincent Morey stirs the lees less than used to be the case, and maintains a fair proportion of new wood, though the oak is in harmony with the up-front ripe fruit.
