About
Domaine Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon is located in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy. The 7.5 hectares of vineyards are farmed according to the non-certified sustainable approach by Michel Coutoux, who is the vigneron in charge at the domaine these days.
Michel Coutoux’s wines are golden yellow. Aromas of pear, citrus and hints of cool menthol show complexity. Ripe apples and citrus notes on the palate culminate into a smooth and clean finish. All his wines are elegant, very complex and have a huge length. The Bâtard-Montrachet is Michel's showpiece, but the Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jean is also of absolute top quality.
The top wines of the domaine are: Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Vergers, and Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru.
The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 1996 scored 99, the Chassagnes-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Vergers 1996 scored 96, and the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 1989 scored 96 by the Wine Advocate.
Robert Parker’s tasting notes on the Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 1996: “This grand cru is unbelievable, possessing everything I could hope for in a white wine. Is this a candidate to merit a perfect score? The profound Chevalier-Montrachet, produced from vines planted in 1968 and 1972, offers a mind-blowingly intricate, precise and refined nose of minerals, chalk, rock dust and flowers. On the palate, this breathtaking wine enthralls with its superbly defined and harmonious medium-to-full-body. Each time I raised the glass to my lips I found new flavors. Minerals, stones, gooseberry, plums, sea shells, toast, raspberries, peaches, pears, honeysuckle blossoms, "champagne" currants, and flint can all be discerned in this silky, lovely, refined, and ethereal wine. Words simply cannot do it justice. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012.”
History
The current winemaker at Domaine Michel Niellon is Michel Coutoux. He has been controlling all the winemaking processes at the domaine since 2020.
The Domaine Michel Niellon was founded in the 19th century by Léon Niellon.
The grandson of Léon Niellon, Michel Niellon, began working at the domaine in 1957, along with his father, Marcel Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over winemaking after his father. Michel Niellon has crafted more than 50 vintages of extraordinary wines. The bottling at the domaine started in the 1960s.
In 1991, Michel Coutoux married Michel Niellon's daughter, Francoise Niellon. Originating from a wine family himself in the Loire Valley, Michel Coutoux has shared the vineyard and winemaking responsibilities since joining the family and Burgundy has become his life.
Mathieu Bresson, the son of Michel Niellon's second daughter, Chantal Niellon, also joined the domaine after graduation from the Lycee Viticole in Beaune.
Approach
Sustainable
Domaine Michel Niellon vineyards are farmed according to a sustainable approach but are not certified as such yet.
The grapes are pressed whole-bunch with further minimal settling. The wines are aged in oak barrels, from 20 to 30 percent of new oak, which matches the terroir expression of the wines. The percentage of new wood remains the same for all the appellations. The racking takes place only when the barrels are blended in a tank for bottling just before the next harvest.
Michel Coutoux bottles around 50,000 bottles of wine from a dozen of appellations.
