Domaine Ramonet

About

Domaine Ramonet

Domaine Ramonet, previously Domaine Jean-Claude Ramonet, is a 17 hectares large domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy. Noël Ramonet and Jean-Claude Ramonet are the winemakers at the domaine.

Noël Ramonet and Jean-Claude Ramonet's wines are highly rated. They are considered to be the star winemakers in Burgundy. The red wines are consistently exciting. The white wines are highly individual. The Ramonet wines would typically be nowhere in the running at first sniff but would subsequently blossom and frequently take first place by the end of the evening. The strongly mentholated character they had in those days needed time to blow off. Their flagship wine is the Montrachet Grand Cru; this wine can live for more than fifty years in the best vintages.

The top wines of the domaine are Montrachet Grand Cru, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, and Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru.

The Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 scored 99, the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 1985 scored 98, and the Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 scored 97 by the Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker's tasting notes on the Montrachet Grand Cru 2014: "The 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru is, without doubt, one of the wines of the vintage, and a real classic in the making. Aromas of tangerine oil, confit citrus, pear, toasted nuts and subtle spice introduce a generous, powerful wine with breathtaking balance and precision. There's so much depth and incipient complexity wrapped up in its intricate structure; it's suppler than the Bâtard but no less tight-knit. For all the fuss that is made of Montrachet, here is one wine that really lives up to the reputation of the vineyard and the domaine, which I'd argue is its greatest exponent. If this can survive for 20 years in the cellar, then it will be perfection itself."

History

1934

Noël Ramonet and Jean-Claude Ramonet are the winemakers of Domaine Ramonet.

The story of the domaine started with Pierre Ramonet. He is a legend, not only for the quality of his wines but also for his eccentric character. He first bought grapes from local farmers but was already able to buy his piece of land in 1934 in the premier cru vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet called "Les Ruchottes". He expanded his property over the years and, in 1978, finally bought a small plot in the world-famous "Le Montrachet" vineyard (plot 66, 0.2590 hectares).

Pierre Ramonet's son, André Ramonet, was also actively involved in the winemaking, but the domaine was succeeded by the next generation, Noél Ramonet and Jean-Claude Ramonet. Noél Ramonet's sons, Michaél and Pierre-François, and one of Jean-Claude Ramonet's daughters, Anne-France, are also involved in the winemaking at the domaine these days.

Approach

Domaine Ramonet is known for its old vines with relatively small yields. The average age of the vines is 60 years. There is minimal settling of the solids before fermentation and not too much new oak. Depending on the quality, the wines are aged from 12 to 15 months in a mix of new and used oak barrels, with generally 30 percent new oak—extended maturation on the yeast spores, light-filtering and only occasional bâtonnage.

About one-third apart from Le Montrachet - giving the wines a solid, thick texture. Sometimes one can detect a menthol character to the wines on first opening, though this blows off with aeration.

Despite four grands crus in the cellar each year, the Ramonets retain a special affection for the premier cru vineyards with which their grandfather Pierre Ramonet made his name: Les Ruchottes in white and the Clos de la Boudriotte in Pinot Noir.
