About

Domaine Jean Tardy

Domaine Jean Tardy is a small domaine located in Vosne-Romanée. The current winemaker is Guillaume Tardy, who makes remarkably elegant wines. Today the holding covers 4.5 hectares.

The top wine of the domaine is Vosne-Romanée Echézeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru. Vintage 2012 scored 95 and 2020 scored 92-94+, by the Wine Advocate. Robert Parker comments: “Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Echézeaux Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Jean Tardy has a lovely, very pure and terroir expressive bouquet with precise strawberry and pit cherry scents, beautifully interwoven oak and a drop of iodine developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, very well judged acidity, an Echézeaux that just seems happy in its own skin - natural, refined and just delicious to drink now and over the next 10-15 years, possibly longer. Chapeau!”.

History

Since 1970 Jean Tardy has been a third-generation member of the family estate. He cultivates vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny.

The roots of the domaine go back to Guillaume Tardy grandfather - Victor Tardy, who worked for Ettienne Camuzet and took on some sharecropping contracts for some of the Camuzet’s vineyards. These contracts came to an end in 2007.

Approach

The grapes are completely destemmed, before a 10°C maceration, which takes a week in the tanks. Fermentation starts slowly at about 12-13°C with pumping over the juice. The wines are matured for 14 to 16 months, before being bottled. Guillaume Tardy uses a double portion of CO2 for bottling, to deliver a lovely freshness of grapes.
